NERC Transfers Electricity Regulatory Oversight To Four States by Gs001(op): 6:59am On Jan 14, 2025
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has completed the transfer of regulatory oversight to four states.

NERC made this known on its social media handle on Monday, listing the states as Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, and Imo.

According to the electricity market regulator, the states are now fully responsible for the regulation of their electricity markets.

There are currently 11 electricity distribution companies, namely: Abuja, Benin, Enugu, Eko, Ibadan, Ikeja, Kaduna, Kano, Jos, Port Harcourt, and Yola, aside from the 12th one, Aba Power Electric.

With the completion of the transfer of oversight in four states, the pre-existing market structures in Enugu, Benin, and Ibadan Discos have been adjusted.

It noted that it has begun the transfer of regulatory oversight to 10 states as of 10th January 2025.

In 2025, the other six states will incorporate their sub-companies to further change the electricity market structure.

The commission stated, As of January 10, 2025, NERC has commenced the transfer of regulatory oversight to 10 states. Once the transfers are complete, the states will be responsible for regulating their electricity markets.

“The 10 states are Enugu; Ekiti; Ondo; Imo; Oyo; Edo; Kogi; Lagos; Ogun; and Niger. The transfers have been completed for four states, namely Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, and Imo, while six states are still in progress.”

The transfer, which is consequent upon the enactment of the 2023 Electricity Act, has altered the mode of operation that existed in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry since 2013.

Nice one

And that's if the states will be proactive enough to take advantage of the opportunity to create a new down in their states

Stable power alone can push Nigeria fuel consumption down by 50%

Can someone please explain what this means? How will it benefit the states or the people in those states? Should we be worried?

The post did not explain anything to us, they just assume everyone has an idea what this means and how it benefits them🙄🙄🙄
Re: NERC Transfers Electricity Regulatory Oversight To Four States by RandomFellow: 8:10am On Jan 14, 2025
Regulatory oversight does not mean power generation. This means power might even get worse in those states, the price wight be 5x the current price and the people there cannot complain to NERC.

Aba power recently applied to NERC for 100% increased tariff. Does it mean they'll have to apply to Enugu (if they fall under Enugu's purview)?
Re: NERC Transfers Electricity Regulatory Oversight To Four States by RandomFellow: 8:15am On Jan 14, 2025
What is (are) the criteria used to decide the states? Is it generation? Population? Connection? Kogi (Ajaokuta) generates power. Niger (Shiroro and Kainji) generates. Lagos generates... Does Enugu generate?

Secondly, 5 of 6 SW states are in the list... What is the endgame?

Should we be worried??

Re: NERC Transfers Electricity Regulatory Oversight To Four States by CodeTemplarr:
Looks confusing. That means they can deal with the GenCos closeby directly and bypass the transmission company. They can as well fix extra cost on each unit of power supplied.

Take it of leave it.

Tinubu is restructuring this country.

LG Autonomy
State regulating electricity
Tax reforms

Etc

The fear of we NORTHERNERS is that we don't know how far he would go!

May be he will not just wake up one day and desolve the country 😆

Those states have a regulatory agency already established by law. Most other states have not domesticated it.

Tinubu signed electricity bill into law in 2023.

I want to use this moment to thank and appreciate our President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for having the boldness to sign the executive bill that transferred the generation and distribution of electricity to states. Ekiti State quickly keyed in to it and has now started generating and distributing their own electricity with the completion of the first phase. The State Governor Oyebanji had gone ahead to purchase a lot of transformers to be distributed to streets, communities and other areas that are yet to be connected to the grid. The time for revolution has just began. Many young people that had abandoned their trades to be riding okada will soon go back to practice their trades with the improvement in electricity supplies. Real change is here. other governors that are yet to start must wake up from their slumber and think beyond the box. Before the end of this year we expect improvement in the states that had gotten license now

Any State interested will first create its own electricity regulation authority through legislative means, then apply for the transfer of the regulatory authority to be transferred to its newly established regulatory body. The period for the full transfer is about six months. So if any State is not there it means such States are not proactive and have not comply with the conditions for the transfer of regulatory authority.

Ekiti State had completed the 1st phase of generating power and had started distributing it within the state. The transfer made by NERC means that if a state can generate more than their energy needs, they can now sell to a neighbouring states. Abia State is yet to key-in into this opportunity, until that is done Aba power will still be under national grid

Lies. No State has of now has started generating and distributing its own electricity to the general populace. None. Not to even talk of Ekiti.

We have States like Lagos and OYO who have an inhouse power station to power few critical infrastructure. Government infrastructure. But that they have started generating and distributing to the larger populace is nothing but lies.

Saying Oyebanji has even distributied transformer is even a joke. Is it today that State government distribute transformers? Even LG does.

The process to start the State Generation and Distribution of Power is on and it will take a while to take shape. But saying one State is already doing it nothing but blantant lies.

No come here dey give us faabu

They are regulating the market. This will give them the opportunity to fleece their clients and nothing else.
If you are expecting an improved performance from some of them, you go wait tire.

Edo State is already distributing but to a limited coverage. The former governor, Godwin Obaseki started it.

In a nutshell, those states are now incharge of the running of the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity or are no longer receiving electricity from the national grid as they can now provide electricity for their citizens!

So it's now Tinubu not Buhari that signed the electricity bill into law😆😆
As much as I don't like Buhari,it would be unfair to not credit him for ensuring that such important bill was signed into law!
Now apc miscreants want to use what Buhari clearly did to credit Tinubu showing that there is absolutely nothing he has done so far apart from inflicting sufferings on Nigeria!

Very true, it's the reason why I believe the nation is under economic attacks and sabotage. Just imagine artificially keeping the power industry in state of comatose to reap off high demand in fuel. NNPC have been an active enabler in my opinion
Re: NERC Transfers Electricity Regulatory Oversight To Four States by nwirinedu(m): 11:11am On Jan 14, 2025
The Discos are located in the affected states, I hope they're not asking the Discos to regulate themselves, that would be a serious conflict of interest and severely harm customer's rights.

Is it really the state or a private company doing it? This clarification is necessary if a private company is doing it on behalf of the state nothing has changed. Customers will still be ripped off.
