The Edo State Government has issued a strongly worded statement disassociating itself from John Mayaki, former Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki. According to a release signed by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Mayaki’s statements “do not reflect the official position of the Governor’s Office on any matter and should be disregarded.”

The statement emphasized that Governor Okpebholo’s official spokespersons have been duly appointed and announced, urging the public to verify information through official channels. While acknowledging Mayaki’s right to express personal views, the government made it clear that his opinions must not be attributed to the Governor.

This development comes against the backdrop of Mayaki’s recent public praise of Governor Okpebholo, a sharp contrast to his previous harsh criticism of the Governor. During the gubernatorial campaign, Mayaki was one of Okpebholo’s most vocal detractors, accusing him of nepotism, incompetence, and evasion of public debates. In one op-ed, Mayaki described Okpebholo as a tool for political overlords aiming to regain control of Edo State’s resources. This sudden reversal has raised eyebrows, particularly among those familiar with his sharp critiques during the election campaign.

An insider in the Government House, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested Mayaki’s recent shift in tone may be part of a broader agenda.

“There’s fear that Mayaki is angling to remove the current Chief Press Secretary,” the source alleged.

“His sudden praise-singing is an obvious attempt to curry favor. But the APC is not a rehabilitation home, and Mayaki should do the honorable thing by sticking with the candidate he supported during the elections.

Same Mayaki that was saying Okpebholo is avoiding the press because he might have a mental impairment and cannot think? He will not be allowed to reap where he did not sow. There’s no space for him here. Some in Government House have described his actions as unbecoming, likening them to a dog returning to its vomit.”

As the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal begins, the stakes for Governor Okpebholo’s administration couldn’t be higher. With the PDP challenging the legitimacy of his election, the tribunal represents a critical moment for the government to defend its mandate amid growing public scrutiny. The Edo State Government appears to be closing ranks to prevent any distractions that could undermine its defense at the tribunal and in the court of public opinion.
