This is simply because poor men are believed to be lazy and There is a belief that women gets a man off seating on his hands.
They force a wife on you and in return she force responsibility on you and you learn to provide .

You get free sex and maybe she borrow to feed you on the first year after marriage (free trial ) after that all hell breaks loose and you get to provide for her and the price of the free sex you’ve been having.

Nigeria is poor and backward because its people have poor and backward minds. That's the answer.

When you don't even know how backward you are, then there's no hope of improvement. You will only just be seeing difficulties and complaining why, but you will refuse to change any of your long-held and practiced traditions.

Backward societies are not ruled by reason and logic but by tradition, regardless of the relevance or appropriateness of that tradition in the times that they are living in.
