Man With Ear Piece Crushed To Death By Train In Lagos by adenigga(op): 10:45pm On Jan 17, 2025
There was pandemonium in Lagos on Friday when a trader was knocked down by a Lagos-Ibadan train around Oshodi Lagos.

The incident happened around 2pm with sympathisers and passers-by thronging the area.

Eyewitnesses said the trader was crushed to death in front of Arena Shopping Complex, Oshodi.

The middle-aged man was said to be urinating while standing on the middle of the rail tracks, with an earpiece on his two ears.

Witness told out reporter that despite the heavy horn of the train and passers-by shouting to warn the man, he could not hear due to his earpiece.

Sympathetic passers-by who gathered around the dead body, said the man killed himself.

Another witness identified the dead man as a trader who has a shop at a shopping complex called Moyosore.

He said the deceased was chatting on the phone with three other people moving on the railway tracks, but the three others heard Train horn and quickly ran away.

The deceased dead body was still lying on the ground in front of his closed shop, while there were frantic efforts to reach his family.

Sources said police had been called upon to evacuate the corpse while efforts were ongoing to contact the family.

Daily Trust reports that cases of train knocking down people have become a recurring decimal due to high prevalence of human activities on the train corridor within the Lagos axis.

In areas like Agbado, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, traders often display their wares on the rail tracks while quickly packing the wares as soon as a train approaches thereby endangering their lives.

A source in the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) who confirmed the train accident to our correspondent said the identity of the victim had not been identified.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Lagos Police Command, Ben Hundeyin was yet to respond to our correspondent’s enquiry on the incident as of press time.

It is always unsafe when pedestrians & even drivers wear earpiece while on the road.

But even with earpiece, you should hear or see or feel an approaching train.

Witness told out reporter that despite the heavy horn of the train and passers-by shouting to warn the man, he could not hear due to his earpiece.

Sympathetic passers-by who gathered around the dead body, said the man killed himself.
Maybe the man commited suicide.

That's strange, but no matter how loud his earpiece was, the horn of a train can't be overshadowed, even if it's the best oraimo earpiece... Also the vibration on the rail line should be enough to create awareness.... If it's not suicide like someone had mentioned, then it's village people...

RIP to the dead

I was nearly hit by a van just because of one JBL loud earpiece like that and my carelessness, the Bass was so good that I wasn't attentive to what's going on around me, The van was on reverse and it was Late at Night, Though Street lights were on, it was just few distance near me before something told me to turn back. That was my saving grace that time. Ever since then I stopped blocking my ears with earpiece or any of it kinds. If I want to make use of earpiece I would plug in one ear and leave the other open, in case of emergency.

I don't get tempted to using both earbuds wen walking along the street or driving. I only make use of a single bud. Listening to my songs jejely and also being conscious of my environment.

Can’t the NRC fence off the Railway Tracks and build foot bridges over them for Safety?

His Children are now Fatherless

May he RIP

People are too careless and senseless in Nigeria. Lagos state had to temporarily stop operations for the red line trains to build a fence at THAT SAME OSHODI to prevent traders and pedestrians from accessing the rail tracks.

Honestly, why would a person in their right senses be selling their wares on a WORKING RAIL TRACK. I TIRE FOR SOME PEOPLE.

Fast transition. He didn't see it coming. It will take him quite a while in the afterlife to decode what has happened to him. RIP to him.

How could he be so deaf that he didn't hear the noise of the incoming train? His death is suspicious, I tell you.

There needs to be an earlier warning system than the trains horn. When train is 1 or 2mins away horns and flashing lights should indicate the train is approaching.
Re: Man With Ear Piece Crushed To Death By Train In Lagos by SporaD8:
For all those asking if he couldn't hear or see the train coming, I will share my personal encounter on this subject...
The major culprit is preoccupation!
I just alighted from a danfo on an ever-busy bustop. I quickly cross toward the empty BRT lane and got preoccupied with counting my balance.
Unknowing to me one BRT bus was speeding and
furiously blaring it's horn toward me but my preoccupied mind just interpreted everything as one of the Buses plying the busy major roads behind and Infront, not the empty BRT lane!
Fortunately as I wasn't in a hurry to cross the lane, the BRT bus could only hit my stretch arms counting the money before I immediately jump back!
It's even worse on Train track for first-time visitors and preoccupied minds where traders displays their wares.
These traders are well attune to the sight and sounds of the train so much so they hardly panic and leave less than a meter space between them and the moving train!
A first-time visitor or preoccupied mind can hardly interprete what's really going on until too late...
they find themselves on the track and got hit!

Don't use ear piece on the road, it is a significant risk factor.

This story doesn’t seem to add up. He was with 3 persons when the incident occurred.

1. None of The 3 persons could drag him while running from the incoming train

2. Didn’t he see the 3 persons he was with running away?

3. What could he have been doing that made him so engrossed that he couldn’t hear the sound of the train , nor the screams or shouts from people around?
