More than 4000 talented players from all over the country thronged the pitch of the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja, Nigeria’s political capital, looking for a chance to make it into the team.

Amuneke found a way to see many of them play. He would group the boys into teams with a 30-minute time limit.

https://soccernet.ng/2023/02/the-15-minutes-that-handed-victor-osimhen-a-life-changing-opportunity.html

Are you saying the over 4000 players were recommended?

I repeat, if we don't go back to open screening for U17, and even improve on it and make it even more thorough, with more time and even more zones. Until then, people should not worry themselves with our U17 programs.

Finito.
cc: elyte89 TheGoodjoe my comment was based on this article, divided them into teams and they play 30 minutes each, please do the maths how many teams do you think he can watch in a day?

Victor Osimhen's last 10 games for Galatasaray = 10 goal contributions (8G+2A)!

6 of those 8 goals have come from PENALTIES! cool

Victor Osimhen came to camp with his agent yes or no.

My point most of the players came in with recommendations and agents, yes it was open screening no doubt about it.

I met Emma Amunike recently during my vacation.I led his Heartland team to Rotana hotel GRA Ilorin and had brief discussion with him on state of Nigeria football.I reminded him of 2013 and 2015 under 17 teams cuz i had the opportunity of watching their matches live in Nigeria and Dubai with my football agent brother a very close friend of Amunike.

My question do we need open screening since we have football academies across the nation and also with Nigeria youth league and cup.

In the 80s-90s we have well grounded structures where these players are picked from like YSFON, Principal cup,Manuwa Adebanjo cup and national sports festival

Scoring goals ain't easy sha. It's just that it gives more satisfaction to score from open play. I'm sure even the attackers themselves would rather score from open play than penalty

I repeat, no open screening, no worrying ourselves. Open screening and let the academy boys compete with their peers. It is not every bright talent that makes it to academies.

Either we go back to what worked that gave us back to back titles or rely on the crap we have been doing recently that gave us nothing.

Open screenings are not one day events. Some go as far as a week or more. The reports are there.

He has 16 goals this season in 20 games, 10 are from open play, 6 are from penalties...

Wait till he equalizes the penalty goals to that of the open play goals, then we can ask for more open play goals, because 10 is greater than 6 cool

I really don't get this complaint about Osimhen scoring penalties. Strikers use penalties to stat pad on a daily season after season and we speak of their numbers as world class.

Haaland in 2022/23 EPL season bagged 7 penalties out of 7 to make up his record 36 EPL goals that season.
Scored another 7 pens out of 8 taken in 23/24 EPL season to make it 27 EPL goals.

Harry Kane this 24/25 Bundesliga season has 7 penalties scored out of 7 to make up his 17 league goals so far.

One of the GOATs, Lionel Messi scored 4 penalties at 2022 WC to make up his 7 goals at that tournament. Did we cry??

Another of the GOATs, CR7 scores penalties unashamedly and is so good at it that Messi fans term him Penaldo. A penaldo whose pen prowess earned Madrid the UCL title in 2016 (their 11th in history) with his winning penalty vs Atletico Madrid's Oblak.

Lastly, the issue before was Osimhen being bad at taking penalties but now he is consistently scoring them and we still complain? Na wa for some of una.

Happy Sunday.

Yes not a day event but we have a scheme now that cater for this known as FIFA TDS (talent development scheme) is a scheme if utilized very will give us solid under 17 cuz it gives room for 12 -15 year old footballers......the issue with open screening is funds and security,no one cater for thousands.Present day Nigeria I don't see any responsible father that will allowed his son to travel for open screening that lacks hospitality

Afcon 2025 will hold from December 21st, 2025 to January 16th, 2026.

So we will end 2025 with the Afcon and begin 2026 with the Afcon. How interesting.

Here are the pots:

Pot 1: Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast.

Pot 2: Cameroon, Mali, Tunisia, South Africa, DR Congo, and Burkina Faso.

Pot 3: Gabon, Angola, Zambia, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, and Benin.

Pot 4: Mozambique, Comoros, Tanzania, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.

I just see this as an excuse. We have camped U17 successfully without incidences and it worked. Why fight a working and winning system?

What ever project brought to the table, when it is time for U17, do what worked. Back to back U17 titles is not beans
