Saying your opinion doesnt count is not an insult ,so dont get yourself worked up trying to compose an insult for me wink. Chess is not playing around with word. You might hate chess because of your inability to grow in it and i doubt if you even understand that the moves of chess piece is different from that of chekers. These are strategy games .in chess you have the king, queen,2 nights, 2bishops, 2 rooks(castle), 8 pawn on both side. The movements of these piece varies. You dont undertand these games and its fine ,but chess is not overrated
Saying one's opinion doesn't count, without giving valid arguments to counter such opinion, is a dumb reply, to say the least. &my response was not an insult.

I played Chess back in the days. I even got a little book that analysed some classic games by popular Masters like Kasparov & Bob Fischer.

In all, I still regard Chess as a glorified draughts, or Advanced Draft like someone commented.
&I don't consider those who spend hours playing chess any different from idle folks who spend same hours playing Draft.
It's only those who don't understand Chess that look at chess players with awe.

Only advantage of Chess over Draft is if you're going professional where you'll participate in money-making competitions.

&back to the topic, Scrabbles remains better option for a kid. smiley

Am saying your opinion doesnt count because chess is a world class board game played across all classes in the society and you just want to reduce what what ever your mine can phantom ,no i dont want you to see my take as an insult and truely its not intended for an insult. Scrable helps build vocab while chess is for strategy . Scrable is good for kids to build their vocab and this is only about language and nothing more. But chess mostly to outplay your oppnent with what you have available. How to manage your self out from a difficult situation,

I have never bordered to learn draught because of the type of persons I see gathered around where it is played. Chess is for sharp minded men and women and can't be compared to draught. Draught moves are one way patterned whereas chess has different pieces with different moves, you can be sniped at any moment and protecting yourself, hitting back at your opponent makes it all the fun. If a newbie goes to a draught joint, he will learn same day without anybody explaining to him but if you stand around chess play for years you might still get nothing except you are thoroughly tutored. One demands no skill, the other demands skills.

The Verdict?

Ultimately, the "best" game depends on the child's individual interests and learning style.
Well said. Both games are good and children should be encouraged to learn and become proficient in it from an early stage.

Akinpedia:
Choosing the "best" board game for children's education is like picking a favourite colour – it's subjective and depends on the individual child and their learning style. However, both Scrabble and Chess offer unique and valuable educational benefits that can significantly contribute to a child's development. Let's delve deeper:

Scrabble: The Wordsmith's Delight

Vocabulary Expansion: Scrabble is an obvious winner here. Children are constantly exposed to new words, their definitions, and how they can be used in different contexts.
Spelling and Grammar: Forming words correctly reinforces spelling rules and encourages children to pay attention to grammatical nuances.
Cognitive Flexibility: Scrabble demands creative thinking. Players must constantly adapt their strategy based on available letters, the board state, and their opponent's moves.
Problem-Solving: Finding high-scoring words requires strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. Children learn to analyze situations and make the most of limited resources.

Chess: The Mind Game

Critical Thinking: Chess is renowned for its ability to sharpen critical thinking skills. Players must anticipate opponents' moves, plan multiple steps, and evaluate the consequences of their actions.
Strategic Planning: Chess cultivates strategic planning and decision-making abilities. Children learn to weigh risks and rewards, identify patterns, and formulate winning strategies.
Focus and Concentration: Playing chess requires sustained focus and concentration. Children learn to block out distractions and maintain mental stamina.
Patience and Perseverance: Chess games can be long and challenging. Children learn the importance of patience, perseverance, and accepting setbacks.

The Verdict?

Ultimately, the "best" game depends on the child's individual interests and learning style.

For children who love language and enjoy creative wordplay: Scrabble is an excellent choice.
For children who are more drawn to logic, strategy, and abstract thinking: Chess might be a better fit.

The Good News:

The beauty lies in the fact that both games offer valuable educational benefits. Why not introduce your child to both? You might be surprised at which one they gravitate towards and how much they enjoy the mental challenge.

Beyond the Board:

Both Scrabble and Chess can be played at various levels, making them suitable for children of all ages. They also provide opportunities for family bonding and social interaction.

Instead of choosing between these two fantastic games, consider incorporating both into your child's learning journey. They offer a unique blend of education and entertainment, fostering essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

What are your thoughts? Which game do you think is more beneficial, or do you believe both offer equally valuable educational experiences? grin Share your opinions in the comments below!
Start off with scrabble then they can later gravitate towards chess on their way to becoming grandmasters of the game.

Nice tread.

grin U said it all 'I have never bordered to learn draught...'
So, u don't have any qualifications to criticize draughts. The game is equally complex, intriguing and complicated like chess. Stop looking down on draughts

grin There is professional draughts play too, equally bringing in good money for those involved.
No sport is lesser than another sport.
This is why Nigeria has a lot of average football players, who could, probably, have been excellent at cricket!
Development in kids should primarily focus on MENTAL STIMULATION.
And many things can trigger this. Say swimming! Music Painting Food etc. Not only Scrabble chess draughts
Einstein is rumored to have begun his mental development, merely by picking interest, in playing with the plastic Abacus his dad could afford him.

For long term + vast gains, do chess.

Coming from a Scrabble junkie.

I still played scrabble with my children just yesterday evening.

At their formative age introduce them to Scrabble. Then by 12 let them start chess.

A combination of the two won't be bad at all.

Studies have shown that chess primarily improves aspects of intelligence related to fluid reasoning, working memory, planning, problem-solving, and critical thinking; essentially enhancing cognitive abilities that involve analysing complex situations, making strategic decisions, and thinking several steps ahead, often referred to as "executive function."

Chess requires a lot of strategic thinking which is much different from draughts.

It is said that the number of possible chess moves is so vast that it reaches into the trillions, often cited as around 10^120, meaning there are more potential chess variations than atoms in the observable universe; this number is often referred to as the "Shannon Number" in chess analysis.

Don't compare chess with draughts. They are not in the same level. Chess is far more complex and better in terms of the aspect of intelligence it improves.

People have been playing chess for years yet there are still positions and variations that are puzzling.

Scrabble and Chess help to develop one's critical thinking and time management skills. Though Chess is more complicated.

Add Monopoly to foster financial knowledge. I primarily played Scrabble & Monopoly with my children.

I understand, but in the age of information, i think it's more important to be resourceful than strategic. And not everyone is in a position where strategy is going to be the determining factor for their outcomes. But everyone needs vocabulary and spelling in the short and long term. It's also hard to measure results of Chess as a game as it effects a person

Vocabulary as regards one language?

Never underestimate strategy. In life, you can't be successful if you are not deliberate and strategic about your success.

While in school you strategize on time management and resource allocation. Scaling up your preferences.

One aspect that chess also improves is spatial intelligence. Scrabble does same too but not to the degree that chess does.

You need a lot of foresight and seeing things your opponent can't see while it's in front of them.

To be resourceful (have the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties), one must be strategic (be able to identifylong-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them).

In fact, I doubt we can claim a resourceful person is not specifically strategic, as strategicness is the defining "ability" of resourcefulness. I think.

As for "needing vocabulary and spelling" yes that is essential too. One must be able to put ones thoughts into coherent well spelt out vocabulary in order to strategize resourcefully.
