From: WOLE BALOGUN, Ado-Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has applauded Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) for reducing unemployment in the state through the establishment of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) and investing in agriculture. Governor Fayose noted that ABUAD was the second largest employer of labour in Ekiti after the state government, saying that through ABUAD, so many small and medium scale businesses had sprang up in the state capital. The governor stated this while declaring open the edition of the Afe Babalola Agricultural Expo open at the campus of the institution, on Wednesday. He was represented by his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola. Governor Fayose urged other citizens of the state to emulate the legal icon by initiating programmes in the area of Agriculture, and social services to benefit the people of the state. In his address at the occasion, Chief Babalola urged the state government to include rice as on of the areas to be given priorities noting that the Federal Government has pledged to donate a rice processing mill to ABUAD. He said that the even if the Federal Government reneged on its promise, the University would buy the mill, adding that rice produce in the state, through the assistance of the state government, could be processed at ABUAD. In his key note lecture titled, “Food sufficiency, a Myth or Really”, the Chief Executive Officer of Chocharis Motor, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, said that every Nigerian must take another look at farming. He said that farming is the only way out of the economic crisis facing the nation saying, “If you eat today, you better thank the farmer.” Maduka urged the Federal Government to provide the enabling environment for agricultural endeavours, while urging the people to go back to farming. According to Maduka, “I dream of Nigeria that poverty shall be no more, prosperity would be in abundance, of sound security, where my son’s and daughters proudly displaying their international passports and where great technological development is in abundance. “We are blessed with great opportunities in agriculture. There is opportunity for everybody to become anything he wants in this country.” Maduka, however, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reduce interest rates to 2 percent and elongate payment of agric loans to 10 years. https://educationexplorersite./2018/01/15/afe-babalola-university-is-ekitis-second-largest-employer-of-labour-fayose/ Lalasticlala 1 Like |

CU I learnt has 2000 full time staff-this is apart from those who come to their campus to sell and participate in other economic activities. ABUAD is about the same size as CU with a Mega Teaching Hospital, Industrial park and Textile mill so they should have thousands of workers too. However having a university as the second highest employer of labour is also indication that the state isn't very industrial. A university can't take this kind of lead position in Employability in Lagos, Ogun or Rivers. 42 Likes 1 Share |

Another good side to this is that private universities bring together a whole group of economically powered individuals who can uplift a community's economic status with their spending capacity. SMEs in communities around private universities should see sales boost. Lalasticlala 10 Likes |

SpoiltVirgin:Exactly that's more jobs, especially for people interested in academics. The federal universities are already saturated with workers whose wage bill are nearing 1 billion/month for most FG Unis. New Departments are rarely created these days so most senior academics would have to retire for new ones to come in. On the other hand more private universities keep coming-meaning many would transfer out of public Unis freeing space for newer recruitment in those Unis. Privates call for additional employment. Privates request for per time staff which would drive up the pay of senior academics. All that at no cost to Govt! I think it's OK afterall even the US and India could manage 5200 and 8000 higher institutions. 4 Likes |

Nonsense. A university should never be amongst the highest employer of labour in a state. It should be a conduit for employable individuals, should be the bedrock upon which industries are sited. Fayose please leave that state quickly. All you've managed to do is reduce the expectations , dreams and aspiration of the good people of Ekiti. 4 Likes |

Very true The teaching hospital alone has employed hundreds already. Its one of the major things Ekiti has going for itself. Its a shame that its privately owned. The governor prefers cheap displays of fake love for the masses. Cutting pomo, riding okada, etc. 4 Likes |

As good as it sounds, it is heart breaking. Assuming ABUAD employees 2000 -which I doubt it up to-- [let's say 500 academic, 1500non academic] and it graduates 500 students every academic year, where would a huge number of it graduates be employed? Nigeria needs to be restructured so it 'human capital' would be successfully utilized. 2 Likes |

Mirand606: It doesn't matter whether it's a university or not, the important thing is that the school is employing workers and paying their salary or are they not making profit? What's the essence of opening it if not to make profit by rendering a service, same thing applies to other businesses. |
