To your question: Because they are in sane society and not jungle as Africa, they gave women such power mainly because of kids that would always come out from union between man and woman, they had studied it in the past, as it's happening in Nigeria now, when man divorces wife, there is high tendency for the man not to take care of the kids going forwards.

More so, they aren't only doing this for the kids alone but for their society at large, they don't want kids that father neglected because of divorce to their mother, turn to criminals and nuisance to the society.
