EDITORIAL:UNIZIK, Reconsider That Student's Expulsion

BY TONY OKAFOR

The recent expulsion of Miss Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious from Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has sparked widespread debate about the severity of the punishment.

The incident, which involved an altercation between the student and a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, raises important questions about the university's approach to discipline and student affairs.

Punishment should serve as a corrective measure, aiming to reform and educate, rather than destroy.

Expulsion, in this case, seems like an extreme measure, one that may have long-lasting, detrimental effects on the student's future.

As a moulding institution, UNIZIK should strive to provide guidance and support, rather than resorting to draconian measures that can be career-killing.

A closer examination of the incident reveals a complex situation, with both parties potentially at fault.

While Miss Goddy-Mbakwe's actions may be unacceptable in our clime, it is also essential to acknowledge the argument that the lecturer's first touch on the female student without her consent constitutes assault.

This perspective highlights the need for a more thoughtful and multidisciplinary approach to addressing the situation.

In light of this, it would be ideal for Miss Goddy-Mbakwe to undergo rehabilitation through the expertise of the Psychology Department at UNIZIK.

This would provide her with the necessary tools and guidance to understand and manage her emotions, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and cultivate more constructive ways to interact with authority figures.

Furthermore, the university should consider providing training for lecturers on maintaining healthy boundaries and fostering positive student-lecturer relationships, as well as promoting cultural sensitivity and awareness to prevent imperialistic attitudes and behaviours.

It is also important to note that Miss Goddy-Mbakwe's case should not be exploited as an opportunity for personal gain or promotion.

The university's actions should be guided by a genuine concern for the student's well-being and growth, rather than a desire for self-promotion or political posturing.

By adopting a more rehabilitative approach, UNIZIK can demonstrate its commitment to the well-being and growth of its students, rather than simply punishing them.

We urge the authorities at UNIZIK to reconsider their decision and explore more constructive ways to address the situation, ensuring that Miss Goddy-Mbakwe is given a chance to learn from her mistakes and continue her academic journey.

The university's decision to expel Miss Goddy-Mbakwe may have been intended to send a strong message about the importance of discipline, but it ultimately undermines the university's role as a nurturing and supportive environment.

Instead, UNIZIK should focus on providing a safe and inclusive space for all students to learn and grow.

Ultimately, the goal of discipline should be to educate and reform, rather than to punish and exclude.

By taking a more holistic and rehabilitative approach, UNIZIK can promote a safer, more supportive learning environment for all students, and help Miss Goddy-Mbakwe to learn from her mistakes and reach her full potential.

The person who wrote this editorial dey ment.
How does the lecturer's touch constitute an assault.

The werey even said it's a touch without her consent. Who asked her to use a busy hallway for a Tiktok video shoot without other users' consent.

We are took quick to talk about the western culture. If that lady had done such rubbish in either US, UK or Canada, she will be in court by now.

Imagine her first public statement were lies of sexual assaults against the lecturer. Thank God for video evidences.

I read my certificate and found where it was written that I was "found worthy in CHARACTER AND . . . "

The University is not just a training ground for academic and knowledge but also of discipline. It molds characters. That's why from my Village, there are times you say something or behave and somebody will quipped "this doesn't resemble somebody that has gone to school". This statement presupposes there should be a significant difference between. Imagine fighting because someone interrupted you.

Ok! What was her action or reaction upon discovering she was assaulting a lecturer? If at all she was not "right", she would have gone on her knees immediately to show remorse and same camera recorded her action which would have helped her in her defense but No! She only thought the man was a Student.

The editorial crew are part of the social vices bedeviling our society. Too sad!

Psychiatric hospital is a rehabilitation center, not a university.

Universities clearly state that fighting attracts EXPULSION.

She signed the document at her matric and her own fighting was WITH EVIDENCE AND PUBLIC GLARE.

Tore a lecturer's clothe and clearly bite her teeth into a lecturer's body, all with video and picture evidence with students witnessing it

If it is not checked, students will be emboldened to start threatening Lecturers and series of lecturer beatings will start across Nigeria.

Go and help that girl if you want to help her. Buy her jamb form in another institution after you will have re-trained her in a rehabilitation center.

Her mother failed to train her right.

No appeal should be made to prevent more fights from being encourage

You're a dunce

Some Men are one of the most foolish creatures on earth… Yes I’m a man, but here’s why I said what I said

These foolish girls who gives them wings to fly?
Men

Who promotes their foolish lifestyles all because of the lump flesh with hole in between their legs?
Men

And yet the same foolish men come here to defend these products of failed family

Women hardly condemn their own rather they keep a blind eye and choose to be silent instead of speaking out. Why can’t these foolish men do the same instead one of them chose to display his stupidity

Only a MAN could be so adept at DEFENDING a USELESS girl.

Captain-Save-a-Hoe-ism is etched deep into men's DNA. It takes conscious and sustained effort to REIN it in.

This guy brought out every TRICK in the book.

Shifting blame.
Dividing blame.
Mental health crisis.
Magically transforming the girl into a victim.

Tony is trying really hard to EXONERATE the stupid girl.

Tony is a FOOL!

He even said "touching the girl first" was an ASSAULT.

Tony is trying to EXAGGERATE the Lecturer's role while DOWNPLAYING the DUMB girl's part.

He's advocating for the University to commit scarce resources to the rehabilitation of ONE single simpleton.

MADNESS!

That girl is a 300-Level student and at least 21 years old. If she doesn't know better than to NOT attack a Lecturer by now, then her case is HOPELESS.

University is a place of learning NOT your personal therapy center.

Tony's excuses and jutjustification is INFURIATING.

Would Tony write this NONSENSE if a male student POUNCED on a Female Lecturer and UNLEASHED his inner Mike Tyson upon her?

Tony is MAD!
Re: EDITORIAL:UNIZIK, Reconsider That Student's Expulsion by BlackyOne: 9:56am On Feb 15, 2025
OP... Is there any sense to this write up of yours?

Is there a course in the university on character and good behavior? And even if there is, is it part of every curriculum in all fields of study?

Characters and good discipline are taught and learnt at home and exhibited outside the home (institutions).
The parent of the girl obviously failed in their primary responsibilities to train her WELL.

The lecturer is being lenient, otherwise he should have charged the girl to court for assault...she should be behind bars, that would have been a better lesson to her and her parent.

Expulsion is the softest.

This young girl played the sexual assault card and if there were no witnesses or clips, that would be the end of that man's time there.

She falsely accused him with such heavy allegations after she left the scene as we all saw in her write up.

If the man wanted to go the legal route, without even the influence of his wife, that lady would serve jail time.

Tearing him to shreds and biting him? Then going to write epistle with daunting and heavy accusations?

In similar vein, if a lecturer is found in a situation where they break the law or play God, let the hammer be heavy on them too. This incident will not make us forget how many of them misbehave.

But for this incident, justice was served. She needs to thank her stars the man isn't pressing charges. If na asia, usa, she'll be jailed. Then rehabilitation.

Tony Okafor, you wrote trash and don't even understand some basic things.

Kewtt:
This editorial must have been written by an illiterate. All student disciplinary committee verdicts are subject to appeal.

Her mother is a lecturer in the engineering faculty in same institution. Let her begin the legwork.

Moreso you must understand that expulsion is a very mild response. She could have been maimed by fellow aggrieved students. Hence expulsion assuages the feelings and tempers for the time being.

The man's wife who's a judicial officer can decide to go legal on her....that would be worse.

So let sleeping dogs lie. Find something better to do with your time. Finally her mother should do the rehabilitation. Most likely she must have been beating the mother at home ....that must be investigated.
My question to you is, can you ask someone to move without touching the person? Secondly, does the lecturer have right to ask her to delete her videos, consficate her phone not minding that the video was taken in public space. What right does the lecturer have to confiscate her phone and ask her to delete her video. Both are wrong, but the lecturer didn't manage issues properly.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater
Lets go through it logically.
Somebody tells you excuse me, and taps you to signal urgency and your response is : who does he think he is.
You posted the video on him tapping you online, there is no reality where the lecturer's first touch can be considered assault, like how exactly can you defend this statement.
you decide to drag his shirt.
You decide to bite him ( lets not get to how dangerous human bites are).
You now release a statement of LIES, emphasizing your breast area, even when videos of the event are scattered over the internet.
You are falsely accusing him of sexual assault on the internet with your full chest.

What would be an appropriate punishment for these trangressions, think about it

Saying that touch is assult will make it difficult to reverse the punishment. How dare you as a student make video on the walkway infront of a lecturer. He tapped you by saying excuse me. Infact during my days in Futo, my late prof. Okoroafor will hold you by the ear and drop you near by. How dare you stay on his way doing such nonsense. University certificate are awarded to those found worthy in Character and Learning.
