But because the regulations are not stringent, the pharmacists are not doing what they are trained to do.
Any practicing pharmacists whose license is used to import fake drugs should loss his license to practice.They are called supervising Pharmacists for a reason. Any pharmacists who is responsible for any pharmacy where fake drugs is found should loss his license.
Those are ethical obligations required to safeguard the public.
Secondly, there is nowhere to know who allowed what medications through the port of entry. These products are usually not declared and most times, they are concealed ( albeit in plain sight). It then begs the question, why will anyone allow such through the port? Official are often compromised. How did over 10 trucks load of fake medicine pass through the ports without anyones knowing about it?

I don’t agree that pharmacists should be in the business of importing drugs at all. Too many pharmacists to ensure quality. Only company’s in the business of manufacturing drugs wholesale should import. Pharmacists can buy from them and sell retail. Individuals should not have the ability to import drugs in a country. Of course customs are compromised. If these people passed through any customs officer and paid bribes, there are ways to find out who compromised by tracking the shipment that brought in the drugs and the officers on duty at the time.

Nafdac is mostly impounding some foreign drugs with no nafdac number. That doesn't mean that any drug without nafdac number is fake. Most of the special drugs that are meant for special cases are mostly without nafdac number because they are not every day market drugs. They process of going for nafdac number for such drugs that is not every day sell drugs will inflate the price of this so drugs. Nafdac terming it fake because they were not having number is the highest level of deceit.

Why should any drug not have NAFDAC in Nigeria and you say it's authentic? Is your brain asleep while you type this?

Nobody will give small scale backyard just spring up manufacturers license. There is a process and written requirements to these and the license should be limited. If the country can only issue one per state. That’s 37 licenses. That’s enough.

Death penalty ASAP

As a businessman, if you import the BEST medications from the USA and UK but don't register it with NAFDAC. NAFDAC will brand it FAKE.

If you import substandard from China, India and Pakistan and pay millions in unofficially bribe + official fees to NAFDAC, It becomes 'ORIGINAL'. NAFDAC has affiliation with some drug manufacturers in India, China and Pakistan.

We know that there criminals and fake drugs merchants in the system who produce counterfeits. They should be arrested and dealt with severely. However, NAFDAC should stop sensationalizing and abusing word 'FAKE'.


There are UNREGISTERED drug and there are 'FAKE/SUBSTANDARD' drugs. They are NOT the same.
For a drug to be scientifically branded fake, it must be test via laboratory analysis. Qualitatively and Quantitatively..


Teva drug products from Europe and USA was unregistered for many years ( medicine dealers were selling underground) in this country until they paid money to NAFDAC. In those years prior to registration they saved many Nigerians who were hypertensive from dying.

Conversely, big retail pharmacy chains like Medplus, Healthplus sell those Supplements and Health foods imported from USA, UK, and Canada without NAFDAC number. We don't hear NAFDAC harassing them and seizing their goods. The reason is- TRADE POLITICS.


A lot 'Politics' is involved in the drug trade and NAFDAC sometimes play it badly due to the greed of some of its officers and 'consultants'.

This news has a tinge of sensationalism. I am a medical professional with a PhD and I know better than to swallow, hook, line and sinker like many ordinary laymen on this thread.

What most business people in the market do is to ride on the back of established brands and make more money.
This is how it works. A lot of foreign manufacturers of popular medication brands have NAFDAC number on paper but they do not have existence or production in Nigeria or even distributors. This could be due to the challenges of running a successful organized business in Nigeria. Remember, these products are already popular in Nigeria, so there is no issue with consumers accepting them.
An Igbo business man would then approach a third party in the foreign country where the medication is still manufactured. Remember, the foreign version in the same packaging of the medication won’t have NAFDAC number because it is not a requirement over there.
Then, somehow they successfully import these foreign versions into Nigeria but this are now term fake. The reason they are considered fake and rightly so is because there is an existing NAFDAC number for that product in Nigeria. However, the Nigeria version is not available anywhere.
Another thing some of the traders do is that they also knowingly import the foreign version even when the Nigeria version is still available. This practice cause undue competition with the local version, and results in lost of revenue for the original Nigeria company. In fact, some of the market raids are sponsored by companies that have experienced this issues.
Note, there are also the very bad actors. These ones deliberately go all out to import very fake counterfeit versions mostly from Asia. These are the very bad heartless actors .
In most markets, even their own union are against the last group. They do confiscate the fake products and sanction such individuals.
But when it comes to NAFDAC raid, every one is a suspect.

Every drug that is imported into Nigeria must first be submitted to NAFDAC for verification of its authencity, potency and safety .

Samples of expected batch are submitted to NAFDAC before hand for testing. Even the foriegn manufacturers ISO certification and Health regulatory license is scrutinized by NAFDAC as part of screening.

If everything meets NAFDAC standards, the importer is given the go ahead to import the said pre approved drug specification and quantity.

On arrival into Nigeria, NAFDAC will take hold of the consignment at their main laboratory in Lagos and do random testing on the each batch samples. NAFDAC will only finally release the drugs to the importer after it is fully satisfied with the consignment.

Now here is where it gets shaddy.

Most of your distributors will then use the NAFDAC approval and go ahead to then begin to produce extra fake batches with fake NAFDAC certification and most of this is done in markets in Onitsha and Aba.

NAFDAC and the FG must not allow themselves to be tricked into reopening those death arena called drug markets!

Those markets must be permanently closed down and replaced with the coordinated wholesale centers (CWCs) as spelt out in the national drug distribution guidelines (NDDGs). Nigeria should have grown past the current chaotic open market system by now!

I heard Peter Obi telling the criminals operating in the market that he'll tell FG to open the market and I was like; does this man even understand the damages these guys cause to our healthcare system? Many Nigerians have met their untimely deaths due to fake drugs coming from the drug markets! I just want to believe that Peter Obi was just making political statement when he addressed those guys and would not make any further moves towards cajoling government to reopen the place.

Instead of talking about reopening the death zone, Peter Obi and others should rather help facilitate the completion of the Oba drug market as a CWC in the southeast where all the regulatory agencies would be on ground to monitor activities going on there.
