President Bola Tinubu on Thursday recalled how he once challenged the former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, and told him that he failed to make history.

Babangida, former military dictator, ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993. He is renowned for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election believed by many to be won by the late businessman, Moshood Abiola.

Babangida was Nigeria’s leader when Tinubu was elected to the Senate to represent Lagos West in 1992.

Speaking at a book launch in honour of Babaginda, Tinubu recalled how he confronted Babangida for always postponing their inauguration after winning election.

He said that he feared he would be imprisoned for confronting the then head of state.

“I confronted you that you had an opportunity to make history that day and you failed to do it. Why not inaugurate us? Why are you calling us back and postponing the inauguration?

“They thought I would end up in jail. You came out right at the end of the remark, you shook me. I can’t forget that,” Tinubu said amid applause from the crowd.

The President also hailed the former head of state for his contributions to national building, narrating how Babangida inspired him in politics.

“Without you, people like me won’t be in politics. Your progressive revolution to say that you want young, brilliant people in politics, you inspire some of us,” Tinubu said.

In his remarks, Babangida shared an insight as to why he annulled the June 12 presidential election.

32 years after the election, Babangida said he acted to protect the country’s interest.

After Abacha planned most coups in Naija. Abacha was the one that faced the bullet and rescued this useless IBB when Major Gideon Okar had already sized power. IBB was already defeated. Which coup dem planned, and Sanni Abacha was not involved? Definitely, the man said and I remember vividly that IBB all others owed him so much, and that was the reason they couldn't do anything because the guy was fearless. Now, because Abacha is dead, IBB wants to change the history and put the whole blame on Abacha. IBB's head no correct at all. And Tinubu is being mischievous. Oh....if he had not escaped to the UK, Abacha would have dealt with him too.

I am just smiling at those kids saying IBB is a good man. You are damn lucky you were not around or very small during IBB's time. Mehn. Na GenZ dem go use that one confused. I am just waiting for the Abacha family to come out and blast him. Yes, Abacha is evil. We celebrated his death. We rushed to the street when we heard he died. And we hoped that IBB would take the same path. But God answered our prayer by making sure the bullets fired into his leg disturbed him from becoming a civilian president because he tried. If not for that leg, this evil man would have manipulated his way to Aso Rock again. And then...this evil human wants to put the whole blame on Abacha.

The person I am most disappointed in is that useless Osinbajo. No wonder God rejected him and made Buahari betrayed him. A useless pastor. Mad people everywhere.

IBB is more evil than Abacha because he is an evil genius. This Maradona is trying to play himself out of unfavorable legacy of his. IBB cannot escape it. He was among them that annulled the election. IBB legalised corruption in Nigeria. Nigeria made so much money during Gulf War because we sold oil at premium price, but IBB mismanaged everything. Thanks mate for this. I forgot. Before you start saying IBB is a good man (obviously, you are a kid and you just like using your fingers or your mouth before your head), go research who Dele Giwa was. When you see the last moments of Dele before passing to glory, you will start cursing IBB. I repeat, e no go better for IBB and his generation. The way his leg is paralysed is the way his entire generation will be paralysed. Amen.

Gloria Okon's case was what Dele wanted to put out in his newspaper before that mad man called IBB finished him. Dele talked to Okon herself because they were friends, and he got the real truth. The manner Dele was finished pained everyone. As in the whole Nigeria cried for Dele. IBB no go die well. NEVER. Oloriburuku somebody.

Like I wrote earlier in another post, we got to where we are today because we stopped rewarding good people, and also stopped punishing offenders. Babangida is the man who started it all. So, he cannot change anything. He only wants to change his bad legacy before he died. Las las he has understood that a good name is better than silver and gold. IBB will go down the history as the man who normalised corruption in Nigeria. IBB will be known for the death of Dele Giwa. IBB will be known for drug related activities and the case of Gloria Okon. IBB will be known for wasting all the income from oil sold during Gulf War.

Every reasonable person challenged IBB.

However, there was the story that he was held to ransom by Sani Abacha and some other members of the then AFRC, who did not want to hand over power to Abiola, a professed dear friend IBB. Look at him today. While he’s alive, Chief Abiola and his second wife, Kudirat, lost their lives in the struggle.

In order to save his own life, IBB made the famous “step aside” statement, ushering in the late Chief Ernest Shonekan.

Abacha finally barred his fangs on that fateful night of the 17th of November 1993, when he used the official emblem of the head of state on his own vehicle, in his position as the defence minister. The next day 18th of November 1993, Abacha and his group of coupists overthrew Chief Ernest Shonekan. Abacha ruled the nation with an iron fist from 1993 to 1998 and allegedly looted the economy along with his sons, the late Ibrahim and Mohammed, Gwarzo, Paul Oguma (the CBN governor), etc.

As for me, I think that IBB’s economic policies set the nation on the part of trouble. Even though Shagari’s government was accused by the same Buhari/IBB/Idiagbon of corruption, however, IBB/Abacha era was on an unbelievable scale of massive looting.

IBB asked Nigerians if they preferred an IMF loan or SAP. Nigerians fell for it, rejected the IMF loan. IBB along with his then finance minister, Kalu Idika Kalu, followed up and SAP was introduced. Nigerians entered the era of suffering or what is popularly termed “one chance bus”. The naira was devalued. SFEM was ushered in and the destroyed the naira. The problem with our naira started with IBB’s government.

The years of military leadership for me were years of losses. They could have taken the opportunity to make our cities, states and communities better developed than they were when they bowed out in 1999.
