Naira Appreciates To ₦‎1,530/$ In Parallel Market by NaijaCover(op): 1:00am On Feb 22, 2025
The Naira today appreciated to N1,530 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,540 per dollar on Thursday.

But the Naira depreciated to N1,502.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM)

Data published by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, showed that the indicative exchange rate for the naira rose to N1,502.5 per dollar from N1,496 per dollar on Thursday indicating N6.5 depreciation for the naira.

Consequently, the margin between the parallel market and NFEM rate narrowed to N27.5 per dollar from N44 per dollar Thursday.

this is a very common quote in Nigeria, even when it is absolutely not correct. Prices do drop in Nigeria, a kilogram of cooking gas that sold for N1500 late last year in Benin city, I bought some days ago at N1250\kg. A bag of wow rice selling for 140k last December, I bought for 94k last week. A litre of fuel that sold for almost N1500 some months back now averages N1000 or less now. These are just a few examples to make you know that that common saying isn't always correct.

Nice . We pray it keeps coming down to below 1,000 but the sad thing is that our blodas importing goods from China will still not reduce the price of goods.
Re: Naira Appreciates To ₦‎1,530/$ In Parallel Market by Paraman: 6:16am On Feb 22, 2025
If the naira keeps on gaining value, it will lead to the reduction in the price of petrol, goods and services.

A bag of rice was never N140k.

A liter of PMS (fuel) was never N1,500

True, Prices of commodities have dropped marginally but not the way you potray it.

Why is the naira not appreciating against the dollar as much as it should now that Dangote refinery and the NNPCL refineries are functional? Aren't these supposed to be our biggest sources of foreign exchange?

Why the dilly-dallying of the naira?

Thank you. So much of our national thought is made up of simple approximations which are usually wrong.

So in your opinion, the prices have crashed,if we're to go by your upper limit, that is.
So buying a bag of rice for 90k and a litre of fuel for 1k shows prices have come down.

Just out of curiosity, were you still in primary school or maybe nursery as at 2010,2011...?
No offense please

Big lie. According to Babangida's book, the coupist had good intentions till some elements which we all know is Ifeajuna and his fellow ethnic brigade hijacked it and turned it to an Igbo coup..

21 out of the 22 people killed were Yoruba, Hausa/Fulani/SS/Middle belt while only one Ibo man was killed. Azikiwe and the Okpara also miraculously escaped while their companions in other regions died.

The beneficiaries of the coup were also ibos thereby causing a revenge coup a few months after.

Slytiger:
There was a reason court martial did not happen.

This event was later tagged an "ibo coup" by other ethnic groups in the country based on some chains of coincidences :

i. The Killing patterns – only one of the 22 casualties is of Ibo origin, while notable Ibo politicians like the Premier of Eastern region and military personnel like Ironsi were unharmed.

ii. The handing over of the government to Ironsi by Orizu (the acting president and the senate president who could have called for the formation of another civilian government) made it look like it was planned out all along.

iii. The unification decree of May 1966 promulgated by Ironsi, leading to the abolition of regional system of government. Historically speaking, the West and North have always believed in the regional system of government as the best form of government for a multiethnic like Nigeria, however this was taken away by Ironsi, leading to a massive outrage and pogrom in the North.

iv. The coup plotters, though kept in jail but were not sentenced.

Catualities.
Civilians
- Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa
- Premier Ahmadu Bello
- Premier Samuel Ladoke Akintola
- Finance Minister Festus Okotie-Eboh
- Ahmed Ben Musa (Bello's Senior Assistant " secretary for Security)
- Hafsatu Bello
- Mrs Latifat Ademulegun (pregnant)
- Zarumi Sardauna
- Ahmed Pategi (Bello's driver)

Military and police
- Brig. Samuel Ademulegun
- Brig. Zakariya Maimalari
- Col. Ralph Shodeinde
- Col. Kur Mohammed
- Lt. Col. Abogo Largema
- Lt. Col. James Pam
- Lt. Col. Arthur Unegbe
- Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke (Refused Nzeogwu's order in the attack on the Sardauna's lodge and according to the police report was murdered by Nzeogwu)
- Police Constable (PC) Yohana Garkawa
- Lance Corporal Musa Nimzo
- PC Akpan Anduka
- PC Hagai Lai
- Philip Lewande

What’s Aguiyi-Ironsi’s place in history?
The composition of the administration’s advisory team was also another source of discontent. Chief among them was Francis Nwokedi, an Igbo man and former permanent secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, who had become close to him during his days in the Congo. Others were Pius Okigbo (economic adviser) and Lt. Col Patrick Anwunah who was later Chairman of the National Orientation Committee. The most common complaint against the appointments was that, although highly qualified and distinguished, they were either all Igbos or Igbo speaking.

On February 12, Ironsi took his most sensitive decision when he put Nwokedi in-charge of the establishment he set to work out the details of his unified Nigeria. He had also replaced the Attorney-General, Dr. Teslim Elias, with Gabriel Onyiuke, also of Igbo extraction. Similarly, Dr. Pius Okigbo became the Economic Adviser. Then, contrary to Katsina’s advice, he attempted to appoint Prof. J. C. Edozien from the University of Ibadan as the Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, instead of Prof. Ishaya Audu. When he effected promotions in the Army, of the 21 officers promoted from Majors to Lieutenant-Colonels, 18 were Igbo-speaking.

Seriously, you expecting naira to greatly appreciate against dollar when you partnered with NLC to increase the minimum wage thereby pumping more naira into circulation.
