Lassa Fever Outbreak: NCDC Confirms 80 Deaths, 413 Cases Across 11 States by MisterGrace(op): 11:32pm On Feb 23, 2025
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 80 deaths and 413 cases of Lassa fever across 11 states between February 3rd and 9th. The outbreak has seen a fatality rate surge to 19.4%, a significant rise from 17.5% recorded in the same period last year.

Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi Worst Hit

The NCDC reports that Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states account for 73% of all confirmed cases, with Ondo alone recording 34%. Despite a drop in new cases from 68 in the previous week to 54, concerns remain over the rising death toll.

The most affected age group is between 21 and 30 years old, with slightly more males than females contracting the disease.

NCDC’s Response and Preventive Measures

To combat the outbreak, the NCDC has activated its Incident Management System and deployed rapid response teams to Gombe, Nasarawa, and Benue states. Measures include:

- Training healthcare workers on early detection and treatment

- Strengthening surveillance and case management

- Distributing medical supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and essential drugs

The agency is urging Nigerians to take preventive steps such as proper food storage, maintaining clean surroundings, and avoiding contact with rodents. Individuals experiencing symptoms like fever, sore throat, or unexplained bleeding are advised to seek immediate medical attention.

Nationwide Rodent Control Campaign Planned

As part of its prevention efforts, the NCDC, in collaboration with Breakthrough Action Nigeria and other partners, is planning a nationwide rodent control and awareness campaign to curb the spread of the disease.

With the rising fatality rate, the NCDC continues to emphasize early detection and rapid response as key strategies to containing the outbreak.

Oh! Wow! The funny thing is, those products including industrially packaged ones have the urine of those deadly rats on them too.

We need to be extra careful and wash our foods thoroughly before consuming.

We should also endeavor to wash our hands with soap and clean water anytime we touch the door knobs, keys, handshake people outside, touch money, etc.

May God help us.

Year in year out, same disaster keep happening with no intention from the government to take drastic measures in solving the problem.

Then I ask, why is solving problems in this part of the world a rocket science?

Don't treat all early signs and symptoms of fevers as malaria, please.
There's no clinical signs and symptoms that's only peculiar to malaria only.
Moreover, you can be having malaria and lassa fevers at the same time.
The best treatment is testing before treatment.
For lassa hemorrhagic fevers.
It's highly preventable but highly contagious.
Cover and cook your meals.
Kill all rodents in your homes.
Wash your hands with soap and water and use hand sanitizer where it's available.
Make it a habit.
Once there's an outbreak, don't treatment any cases of fevers at home, visit the nearest hospitals.
DON'T HANDLE ANY CASES OF HEMORRHAGE(BLEEDING,FEVER OR SORETHROAT AT HOME), You may be exposing yourself to the virus while caring for the patient at home.
Use face mask, hand gloves and adhere to all universal personal, protective, preventive measures.
Avoid direct contact with bodies or body secretions(eg saliva, mucous, blood, vaginal or seminal) of a suspected cases, to avoid crossing contaminated.
Lastly, be vigilant!!!

Of course disease outbreak is expected, I told a friend that this will happen about 4 months ago when some people started moving around streets giving people unknown vaccines, continue to follow the narrative, free mediactions and slowly die out.
