Eeeh? How many are minors and how many are adults? Among the adults how many are within workforce age and how many are incapacitated and dependent? Among the workforce age how many are employed/ working? How many are unemployed? 30% indeed! |

Antoeni:Not exactly. Those are Nigerians registered by the JTB. Which is a portion of those in formal employment. Most Nigerians are in the informal sector. Many informal sector workers do 'eat fine' while many formally employed workers do not because salary too low. And vice versa. The JTB does not register and tax many of the Nigerians in the informal sector. That is why at the end of the day, a lot of potential revenue goes uncollected. Unfortunately the informal sector is the majority of the Nigerian working class. |

We have maybe between 60 and 70 million Nigerians earning income. Which tax is thirty percent of that number paying?. Is it PAYE?. People that pay tax the way it is paid in the west can not be up to ten percent of working population and the majority are in Lagos |

nairalanda1:Informal sector pays tax ...don't let federal government deceive you.... Market woman pay taxes...if u have time ask them Bike men pay daily...1300Naira per day Small shop owners even located information front of their homes pay taxes...local governent collectors go to their shops to collect and give them receipt.... The amount of people on salary jobs are more than 30% and federal government collects PAYE taxes from salary.... There land use tax....which government charges on virtually all buildings weda u are making profit or not...residential or hotel Everyone pays VAT indirectly when u purchase goods and services..... No let federal government whine you....their mismanagement and embezzlement is the problem |

stasius:So, in 2016 , PwC attempted to answer that question...and it even makes for sobering reading So how many Nigerians pay tax? According to the Joint Tax Board, there are ten million people (precisely 10,006,304) registered for personal income tax purposes in all the states of the federation including the FCT. Out of this, about 4.6 million or 46% are registered with theLagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS)indicating an average of 153,000 or 1.5% per state for others. It gets worse Compared to the labour workforce of 77 million at the end of 2015 according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the number of people in the tax net is only 13%. Ironically even government as the largest employer of labour is not fully compliant in deducting and remitting taxes on the salaries of their workers. This shows why there is a very low correlation between the high public sector wage bill in the budgets and the paltry personal income tax collection nationwide. Now as you know after 2016, government brought in IPPIS...so there was some improvement in 2019, when the World Bank now stated that less than 30% of Nigerians are on the tax bracket. Working Nigerians. Why is it that low 1. Most Nigerians are on the informal sector...which is not covered by JTB. 2. Most Nigerians pay black taxes which don't go into federal and state coffers. 3. Much of the economy is unregulated. Simple. However, there is an increase in number of taxpayers...as at July 2024... The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the total number of taxpayers in the country as of 2021 was 41 million. Mr Olarinde attributed these successes to the leadership of Mr Adedeji. It looks nice, until you realize that the population of Nigeria is 230 million, 80 Million of whom work in paid employment, probably more in the informal sector. At the end, we ain't earning much. Not everyone pays taxes. |

Create jobs first before hungry for taxes When people are employed, taxes will be paid. But a country where almost 70% are jobless and 30% are paying taxes, I think they people deserve applause |

| Re: Only 30% Of Nigerians Pay Tax, Says Akpabio by nairalanda1(m): 6:07pm On Feb 24, 2025 |
advanceDNA:They pay tax to whom? Obviously not federal and state government coffers. Most of that falls under unregulated tax money. At the end, the government and people are cheated out of money. Also, 41 million nigerians are registered tax payers...employed nigerians...for PAYE. That's not enough, as there are 80 million Nigerians in paid employment. JTB does not regulate the taxes colelcted in the market and so forth. Therein lies the problem I've linked to a PwC report in 2016 in my previous comments here. INteresting reading. |

What form of tax are you referring to because there is no Nigerian that doesn’t pay one form of tax or another. It also shows akpabio is shallow in tax matters. Besides if politicians are still stealing in billions it then means we are paying enough taxes. They should block the leakages to raise revenue |

sirray001:In the UK you pay half your earnings in income tax , then you pay things like council tax, which can be as high as 190 pounds a month. Nigeria income tax is not up to half your salary. The equivalent of council tax in most Nigerian cities is non existent No wonder you don't see amenites. You get what you pay for. |

How many of them have something doing? You took all jobs from them, gave the jobs to your children and children of your concubines who don't even pay tax, now how do you want the masses to pay tax when you stole their jobs? APC and empty brains are just disastrous. |

CoronaVirusPro:Majority of Nigerians are self-employed people who only depend on their daily work to eat. Most people don't work in the formal sector, so how would they be taxed? You expect someone labouring to feed himself to pay taxes out of money that's not even enough for him to feed himself and his family... Come on. Most of those who have access to go to UK are already paying taxes in Nigeria. |
