JohnBullMySon:
The context was Balon d'or. AFCON might be a major tournament in the context of confederation cups. It could be competitive and entertaining. That does not make it on par with the Euros in terms of quality, which is what determines the Balon d'or. Your SS2 vs SS3 derby was also competitive and entertaining. Competition is relative, entertainment is subjective.

CAF best players developed and play among Europeans, CAF best squads are made up of Afro Europeans, ranging from 50% to almost the entire team in some cases. Morocco achieved the best record for an African team in WC2022 with a squad full of half-europeans. The success of African tournaments in recent times can almost be directly traced to The european football industry. If the by-product of Europe is improving Africa this much, it isn't wise to think that somehow, AFCON can stand toe-to-toe with Euros.
Lol. You're trying so hard abeg. It Is independent of this context. Henry, Wright, Sturridge, Micah, and many other European journalists have all proven this. They all agree Jamie said rubbish. No need to beat around the bush joor.

This was Ian wright in 2021

He even went on to say then that the best players in Europe as at when he was speaking were from Africa and ‘if we love them at club level why can’t we love them at international level’

If we like let’s continue to listen to dumbos like carragher!

Remember that the context of that discussion was the Balon d'or. Carragher said that he feels part of the reason Salah has not won it is because he plays for Egypt. He didn't even mention AFCON, competition or popularity. It is similar to saying that the Dutch league top scorer will find it hard to win the golden ball. What is wrong in that statement?
No, the issue I have with Jamie is he said AFCON is not a major tournament. That is categorically false.

As for AFCON not being a major factor in B’dor voting, that is a separate issue in of itself. I agree that winning the Euros will have more sway than the AFCON all else being equal but that was not what Jamie said.

Let’s just focus on what was said. If he wanted to add context to his statement, he should have done so.

You have more slots than South America yet South America has won 2 of the last six tournaments.

We take the best five to the WC so If African teams were that good, they should be knocking out European teams. Yet African teams have only made it to the quarters twice.
Three times. But again, we’ve only had 5 of the best African teams since 98. We have been underrepresented in the WC for a long time. 2026 should be a better gauge of where we stand.

@Odunayaw, Papa Daniel on the vergé of moving to the Czech republic. Another CHAN Eagle leaving again after Fatokun's move to Sudan. That's why we can't really have an homebased quota for the team, any exposure the HB gets, he's off.

Japa is more to be feared than injury. Anyway, it's the reality the coaches will have to bear

when you have folks who think like Carragher voting what do you expect? he's only expressing how the voters' minds work

Makes the point that Balon d'Or Europe's best-kept secret can only be won by Europeans and whomever they choose to award it. Africans don't stand a chance cos the world begins and ends with Europe.

Read galatasaray have accused Jose Mourinho of racism after he use the phrase 'jumping up and down like monkeys' to discribe the galatasaray bench after their goalless draw yesterday.
Now one of the first to react to this accusation is our own Victor Osimhen.
My Take: Osimhen should rest on this, he shouldn't be used for Gala and Fener dirty fight.
JM is the last person you will accuse of racism.

Jose Mourinho a racist??

Gala is misusing this end racism campaign and it'll have negative effects for future incidents that are actually racist in nature.

Mourinho mouth will always put him in trouble wherever he goes. He’s my man but if there are allegations let it be investigated so we know the actual truth so no one escapes punishment in the future under any guise. Too much wahala in the world these days sef!

His track record says an emphatic No!

The term is racist. Portuguese and Spaniards need to learn that people are not as tolerating as it is in their countries. Same for South Americans.

Mourinho likely didn't mean it in a racist way but in today's climate, he can't use such term "monkeys".

By the way, Caraggher was right.

AFCON is still not a big enough tournament to decide the Ballon d'Or.

Yes there is. He has a very good personal relationship with Mourinho.

Mourinho has salivated over him countless times.
Also he has a big brother in Mikel who adores Mourinho.

Osimhen of all people with this first hand contact should be able to see through Galatasaray's politicking and stay out of it.

This is a loan club for goodness sake

It is major, but only in the context of Africa.

It's not a global powerhouse.

And it has itself to blame.

I think Mourinho's comments about Turkish referees being incompétent is downright disrespectful. You don't shyte into the same pot you use to cook. He is earning à living in Turkey. Part of the allegations against him.

Unfortunately this is true but some will argue that’s it’s pity party or trying to form victim. The rise of far right politics is no longer helping matters. The same people who created and benefited from globalism now see it as an issue. All institutions built to foster diversity and inclusion by the same people they are now trying to pull it down by themselves, very funny and tiring.

i disagree 'jumping up and down like monkeys' is an idiomatic expression. And looking at the bench he was referring to, it was just one black player in the gala bench.

Is Euto or Copa American big enough to determine Ballon d'or? Mbappe should win Euro and not perform for Madrid and see if he will win The Ballon d'or. Winning euro, Afcon or copa America with performing in your league or winning the world cup will not give you ballon d'or. So yes he might be right but it's not just Afcon

No until we move to off-season. June/July

European football is where football peaks and we have to accept it.

You can't be dragging prime time with European leagues, you'll always lose.

The quality is surely there. What we need now is attention
