Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by Peachgirl(f):
Good evening, everyone. I’m currently preparing for my interview and would appreciate any corrections or suggestions where necessary.
Thank you!

Name of school: St. Cloud State University, Minnesota
Course of study: College Counseling and Students Development
Cost of attendance: $34,586
University scholarship: $ 3,865
Deficit: $30722
Funding: University scholarship
Status:
Me: Good morning sir
V.O: Pass me your I-20 and passport.
V.O: What are you going to do in the US?

Me: I have been accepted for a three years master’s degree program in College Counseling and Students Development at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota.

How did you get admitted into the school? ( Processes involved)

Me: Firstly, I searched for schools in the US that offer a master’s degree program in College Counseling, read through individual requirements and advantages. I applied for my transcripts to be sent and evaluated by WES , got the other requirements or documents and then finished my application and submitted.
V.O: Why did you choose this university?

Me: Well, I chose St. Cloud State University because it’s program learning outcome suits my career need, it also offers experiential education opportunities which includes first year individual helping skills practicum, career preparation and multi cultural affairs.

V. O: why did you choose a master’s degree in College counseling?

Me: So far, from my eight years of experience as an educator, I have observed the negligence of Counseling in Nigerian schools and its negative impacts on youngsters/ learners. While this is not a positive development, it calls for a desperate measure for revitalization of the system to a functional state.

V.O: What will this degree do for you?

ME: A master’s degree in College Counseling and Students Development will equip me with the relevant skills and license to reawaken the importance of Counseling in Nigerian schools in collaboration with the Counseling Association of Nigeria and with the help of NGOs in organization of workshops, retraining of professionals and creation of public awareness of the importance counseling in Nigerian schools.
V.O:What are you doing currently?

Me: Presently, I’m a educator working with British royal class academy and as a diction coach in other schools as a consultant, where I train staff and learners. I also organize virtual diction training classes on weekends for intending coaches and retraining of professionals. From these, I earn 6million yearly and have been able to save up to 10million naira which the proceeds from an inherited 4 blocks of 3 bedroom apartments from my late father as his only child is also part of.

V.O: How will you fund your studies?

ME: Apart from the $3,865 scholarship awarded to me by the faculty for my high performance at the interview, my mom will be sponsoring my education in the United States. She is the Director of Nursing services at the Federal University of Technology Owerri where she earns up to 10 million Naira annually.
Additionally, she owns Goodwill farms, a leading distributor of eggs and poultry in Imo State. Goodwill farms has a total number of 15 employees and it generates the sum of 40 million naira annually.
Furthermore, I have saved the total sum of 10million naira from teaching and coaching diction teachers in Port Harcourt. Also, I am left with an inheritance of 4 units of 3 bedroom apartments that generates 4 million annually as rent by my late father (God rest his soul) as his only child.
Having all these, I’m well prepared to study without any fear of finance.

Me: V.O: What are you long term goals?

Me: British royal classic currently which is my place of work is expanding to accommodate secondary school learners and the need for counseling education will be needed. The change which I strongly advocate for in the Nigerian system of education will kick off from there. Secondly, I will set up an organization that Would train and retrain professionals, who cannot afford a study abroad expenses from the first-hand knowledge I will gain from my studies.

V.O: Do you have funding?

Thank you, well noted

JMG12:
Since you already applied for an F2 visa and they are aware that your husband is in the U.S. on an F1 visa, applying for an F1 visa may be perceived as a potential intent to overstay. However, you can still consider reapplying for an F2 visa and ensure you prepare thoroughly for the interview by addressing the previous refusal reasons and strengthening your application with stronger ties to your home country.

If you still prefer to apply for an F1 visa, you’ll need to clearly demonstrate strong reasons for returning home after your studies, such as career prospects, family ties, or assets in your home country. However, given the perception risk, an F2 visa with better preparation could increase your chances.

All the best

I think the bolded part is the strongest part of your application. The only problem I see is that your are keeping it at the back burner. While the VO is the one asking the question, can you at least drag the Interview into your own corner where you are strong ?

After your first question "what are you going to study", the next one you wrote is "how did you hear about the school?"

Answer: in my work at the British Royal Council as an Xyz, one of my international colleague from the UK recommended this school. Nonetheless , I expanded my search n applied to two other schools but I chose St. cloud, not only on the strong recommendation of my colleague but also based on their courses most aligning with my goals of becoming the best ABC in counseling.

Question: how will you pay?
I earn a 7 figure salary at the British Royal Council (always use any opportunity to remind them of that name, inflate the value of what you do). Asides this, I am make money from my online course in Bleep where I have taught over 1000 people to date about abc. Aside my personal funds my family will support. If the house your dad left is in your name or you will eventually have it, value it and claim the full amount.

My point is, you just have to attack, don't wait for them to ask you where you work cos there is a very good chance they won't bring it if you don't. It's an interview n it can go any way. Lastly, the VO don't have time to verify anything, they barely have time to look you in the face... I am not advising you in one way or the other, just telling you the tools in your possession.

Also, the what will this degree do for you? Find a concrete reason why n always insist you are coming back home. If they ask you what are plans after graduation, don't fall for it, insist you coming back home. HOME TIES.

there nothing wrong with your mock interview, but I see the same type of responses all the time and I am bored of it, you best be sure the VOs who hear it everyday from hundreds people are having a nightmare with these boiler plate answers.

N you need to polish

No specific time, each cases are unique and VO's treat them as such.

Your interview might even be as short as 30secs and you'd be denied, as long as 5mins and you'd still be denied.

It all depends on what the VO is interested in, and your response.

You stressed this VO, she even delayed your blue slip grin

You need to work on your answers, this is a better way to respond and show confidence just from your old transcript.

VO: where are you going to?
You: I am going to XYZ university in Ohio for my bachelors degree in computer engineering.

(This has cut out 3 questions from your old transcript)

VO: who is sponsoring you?
You: My elder brother, he runs a multi subsidiary company which deals with the sales of Real estates and automobiles with a staff strength of 30 and currently generates 18M per month and over 200M per year

(Again, you have cut off 4 questions from above and have shown confidence)

VO: where do you work?
You: I work at my brothers company (xyz limited) as the assistant director in the automobile section and I earn 100,000 per month.
(Again, you have cut out 3 questions and shown you you know what you're doing)

VO: Have your brother been to the US before?
You: NO, but he has been to multiple other countries like the United kingdom, UAE, a frequent traveller to China on business trips, and multiple other African countries. He has also sponsored my elder sister for her elder sister for her masters degree in the United kingdom and she is back to Nigeria now and works with XYZ as ABC.

(Here you have demonstrated your brother is well grounded, well travelled, has a level of responsibility, and is capable of footing your bills).

These are just mistakes I can point out from your previous transcript, what you need to do differently this time also depends on what has changed in your application because the VO will ask what has changed since the last time.
Maybe have a story like, I wrote XYZ exam which enabled me get additional funding from my school and now I earn better at my position blah blah blah.

*Visa Approved*
Date: 21st Feb.
Attempt: 2nd
Deficit: 6,237
Vo : pretty woman of Dominican descent
Location: Abuja

My wife is the F1 and she left Aug, 2024. At her first attempt, we all travelled down but was denied. Two weeks to the slated date she got full funding but for some reasons they couldnt send a i-20 that reflected the funding and we went with almost 52k deficit; we didn't stand a chance.
Upon her second attempt however, it reflected and she was approved but I just didn't want to take the risk so I stayed back.

On the day of the interview, I tried to be very relaxed and didn't rush down even though I was slated for 9am, I got there few minutes to 9am & joined the long queue( from our first outing I got to know that as long as you are for that date the time stated isn't important)

*Interview*

*Vo* : pass me your passport & i-20s and where are we going today
F2: I'm traveling to columbus, Ohio with my son for three weeks during my annual leave and his summer holiday to visit my wife. She's a first year *** student at the **** currently on full funding.

VO : how long did you say you would be staying
F2: three weeks.

( long pause, she kept checking my son's passport and F1 i-20. She would leave and return, check her system & call out for someone. They were laughing and checking while I was rembering my hallelujah challenge the night before and praying. After 10 minutes plus she asked me to step back as they are trying to verify some things.

The next fellow was called upon to be interviewed and was summarily dismissed after which she called me back. At this point she was still not saying anything and was just focusing on the findings on my i-20. She seem to be writing them out & double checking with what she has on her screen. Meanwhile, before we came, my sister had jokingly asked my son to tell the VO that he wants to see his mommy, while we were asked to wait, I got really discouraged since I could hear everyone else around me getting bounced so I reminded my son to keep saying he wants to see his mommy once the lady calls us again. I thought this would be fruitless because I can't really communicate with him once I'm back with her.

VO: (After what felt like an eternity) How did you to meet?
F2: she was my neighbor during our undergrad years sometime in 2012 and we connected due to our shared passion for food, music & football. (She chuckled at this)

VO: When did you get married?
F2: 4th, July 2020. Around that time the covid pandemic was just getting relaxed so we were lucky to have about 170 persons present for our big day ( Nepa took light at this point and I could see her big screen. She had two separate DS pages side by side so I figured she was comparing the former with the current one. I used this opportunity to whisper to my son to "shout it" and he started singing it. Lol

VO: What do you do? ( she say up to look at my son and she asked what he's saying. I quickly told her and she rolled her eyes.

F2: I quickly started about how I'm a solar engineer with 3 branches in different locations....

VO : (seems to be getting impatient now) how much do you make?

F2: Due to the seasonal nature of the solar business, we sometimes make a quarterly returns of upto....

VO: cuts in.. I need an amount
F2 : 7,000,000

VO: (checks her screen, prolly to confirm my former DS input regarding this) Is he your biological child? And pass me his birth certificate.
F2: yes

VO: Pass me your marriage certificate.
F2: (I have about 4 documents regarding my marriage and didn't really know which she meant so I have her all of them including a wedding picture. She sighed and returned everything that only the certificate. Omo! I gave her what I thought was the certificate and she started checking the dates, comparing with her screen.

VO: have you been outside Nigeria before?
F2: I was in Ghana and togo last December where I collaborated with **, a NGO dedicated to empowering & transforming lives through efficient solar powered water solutions for rural communities across Sub Saharan Africa. Over the course of 3 days, my team and I successfully installed 17 automated water stations in Kumasi, Tamale & Kpalime (Togo)........

VO: congratulations, I'll be holding on to your passport...... Bla blaaaa blaaa! As the saying goes, I couldn't even hear anything after that. All thanks to God Almighty for this victory and also to Sir Don for the mentorship and guidance.

Many thanks Oyotunji and everyone else on this page for all the advice and corrections though I was a silent follower. To all prospective applicants please follow up on the transcripts of those that aced the interviews and learn from it.

What do you need guide with exactly? Put in your application following instructions on the school website, if you have any specific problem, ask here, someone will help you with a solution.

As at last two weeks, if you pay with transfer, you should get a confirmation in like 24 hours.

Your request would be moved to pre-approval
