Foreign adversaries including Russia and China have recently directed their intelligence services to ramp up recruiting of US federal employees working in national security, targeting those who have been fired or feel they could be soon, according to four people familiar with recent US intelligence on the issue and a document reviewed by CNN.

The intelligence indicates that foreign adversaries are eager to exploit the Trump administration’s efforts to conduct mass layoffs across the federal workforce – a plan laid out by the Office of Personnel Management earlier this week.

Russia and China are focusing their efforts on recently fired employees with security clearances and probationary employees at risk of being terminated, who may have valuable information about US critical infrastructure and vital government bureaucracy, two of the sources said. At least two countries have already set up recruitment websites and begun aggressively targeting federal employees on LinkedIn, two of the sources said.


A document produced by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service said the intelligence community assessed with “high confidence” that foreign adversaries were trying to recruit federal employees and “capitalize” on the Trump administration’s plans for mass layoffs, according to a partly redacted copy reviewed by CNN.

For the first 40 minutes, the conversation was pretty calm. Vance made a point that wasn’t even directed at Zelensky and definitely wasn’t an attack on him but Zelensky was the one who clearly started the argument.
During that time, Zelensky kept pushing to go beyond what had already been negotiated in the deal. Whenever Trump was asked a question, his response was always something like, “We’ll see.” Meanwhile, Zelensky kept making firm statements, saying there’d be no negotiating with Putin and that Russia would have to pay for the war. Then, when Trump said it was a tragedy that people on both sides were dying, Zelensky cut in to remind everyone that Russia was the invader which, sure, is true, but it felt like he was getting more heated.

Trump did make it clear that the US would keep sending military aid. Honestly, all Zelensky had to do was keep his cool for a few more minutes, and they probably would’ve signed the deal.

The tension really kicked off when Trump pointed out that it’s tough to make a deal when you talk about Putin the way Zelensky does. That’s when Vance jumped in, making a pretty reasonable point basically saying that Biden’s approach of calling Putin names hasn’t gotten anyone anywhere.

Up to that point, the whole press conference had been relatively calm, and everyone was mostly speaking to the audience. But instead of letting it slide, Zelensky turned on Vance and started questioning him directly and not in a friendly way. He brought up the idea that Putin never sticks to ceasefires, pushing the idea that negotiations with him are pointless. And that’s where things really escalated.

Zelensky was so close to locking in the deal and getting new commitments from the Trump administration. But the argument started because Vance criticized Biden and the media for being too moralistic in their approach and that clearly hit a nerve with Zelensky. And from there, things just spiraled.

If you know Zelensky, you know he's a soldier and very angry cos he carries the weight of his peoples suffering. He is like this with all World leaders and they make accomodation for his anger. Also his English is limited. At the start of the clip he explained how Putin broke agreement 25 times. So when JD spoke, he asked JD "What diplomacy would you recommend JD?"

That's the turning point of the conversation, and JD totally flipped, started shouting and humiliating him and the people of Ukraine. Whether JD is angry because he didn't call him Mr Vice President; or JD is angry because Zelensky is sticking to his demand of security guarantee, or because he carries bad mind into the meeting.

Either way JD flipping and disrespect was totally uncalled for, and Trump should have also calmed the matter rather than doubling down and insulting Ukraine.
