Cockerels. You probably are not feeding them well. Or not feeding them the right kind of feed, that's why they refuse to grow. What type of feed have you been giving them?

How do you prevent cats, rats and hawks ?
for hawks, you can put indigo or purple dye on the chicks. That's how we do it back then and it seems to work. There is no threat from normal rats as they mostly have no interaction with chicken, except for the "Asin" rats which are the main threats. These Asin can wipe out a dozen chicks in less than a week. Annoying thing is that they kill the chick and eats the intestines only and move on to the next chick and do the same, sometimes they bite the mother hen laps and maim her when she is trying to protect her chicks. Best bet is to buy spring trap and rat poison for the "Asin" rats and poison for the cats. Kill dem. Also. Try to bury any dead animal you get, either dead chicken or dead rodents or predators. That's the most safe and hygienic way to dispose off dead animals. Thanks.

It's a breed of chicken...they're usually all white, or black and white, and all roosters/cocks.

That's why i don't like keeping too many male chickens. I have only two male.local chickens, and it's only one that crows...and it's not so loud. Besides, the compound is big, and we're the only one that live in the compound.
Okay. If you're the only one, that's probably not a problem.

That's why they're not growing. Even if you want to be raising agric chicken on local feed you don't do that from day old. You're meant to feed them commercialised starter feed for at least the first 4-6 weeks first, then you can switch. You giving them local feed is why they're not growing. I can even see one that's highly malnourished.

You can't escape giving them commercialised feed if you want them to grow. I advise you buy 2 kilos of starter feed (2,400 naira), and feed them with it for 2 weeks, then you can go back to local feed.

Thank you so much. I'll do this ASAP. When feeding them with starter feed, can I cage them for the duration of the 2 weeks or I can be freeing them in the garden....

What if he mixes that (subsequent ones) with the local feed, would that be nourishing enough for the chickens?

It's best he gives them only the commercialised feed if he wants to repair the damage that has already been done, quickly.

they are very flexible and small, best trap to use is the spring mouse trap that will kill then one time, else they will escape.

This hen is out with 10 chicks. I was expecting 12 out of the 14 eggs she laid, but 10 is still great.

Her sister has only 4 chicks.
Two more chicks hatched out of eggs a few days after I posted this. Now the hen has 12 chicks. In fact, another one hatched two days ago, but it wasn't fully formed (the head was like a bloody pulp), and it died shortly afterwards.

Below are pics of the mother hen with her 12 chicks.

How old is this mother hen? For those of us who are more interested in raising for meat. How long will it take to reach table size? Pls pardon my question if it sounds somehow. Thanks for this thread.

The mother hen is 9 months old.

To reach table size, I'd say 9-10 months.

True.

But in most cases you have an unhatched eggs with chicks within, you can help it with a small cracking of that particular egg to help the chick within to further crack it.

This usually happens when the chick within is weak, not properly formed (if you hatch them, you will see a thread like entrails that leads to the anus) they usually die off within days if not properly cared for.

This is the reason I normally don't allow my brooding hen sit on more than 8 eggs. It allows for proper circulation of heat since the hen can comfortably cover them. The rest I eat!

As a Rule, I don't allow any hen sit on the first 2 eggs laid. I eat them and also the last egg. Those are usually the ones with unhatched chicks within after 3-4 days of hatching.
Lool... This reminds me of when we were kids. We were told to put a knife beside the eggs of a brooding fowl as it will make it hatch all the eggs.Don't know if this is true

I had to reduce the sizes of the pics as I couldn't upload big pics.

Usually, about 2-4 of my hen are always incubating, so when 3 hatches simultaneously, I'll merge 2 of the chicks to one mother.
Pls how do you that without hen rejecting them
