It’s not about technology advancement but security concerns. This can work in high brow areas only (Ikoyi, Maitama, and few others.) in Nigeria

Nothing new. I used a self-check in hotel in an European city way back 1996.

But then, it wasn't digital. You pay at the Train or bus station, collect your key and the address, locate the hotel; and check in. At the end of your stay, drop the key and jam the door. No receptionist, no staff for the duration of your stay.
