I think the single most important factor driving dollar down is that its demands have significantly reduced since Dangote started producing much of the petroleum products we use in Nigeria.

I'm also assuming that the PH refinery is working, which makes the rush to get dollars and import petroleum products to be less. That's why the CBN is pushing more USD into the market to create liquidity.

These are stories. For the time being, you guys have using our foreign reserve to defend the naira. No wonder the foreign reserve has been depleted by more than 1 billion dollars. The economic policies put in place by this administration can never yield any positive results.

Bros, it appears you know economics so well and you are grounded.

Please, I am willing to learn from you. Therefore, i am inviting you to accept the challenge for us to engage here intellectually on the benefits of increasing foreign reserves to an economy experiencing deflated domestic production and weak currency.

We can do ot devoid of any caustic or abuses too.

I will be excited of you accept this challenge sir.

The foreign reserve is depleting because we have to pay our DEBTS and not as a result of defending the Naira.

Or do you think we repay our debts in Nairahuh

Spot on !

You see the first four (4) comments show clearly that it's a sponsored post.

The author of this article- Zeal Akaraiwe is a well known Government sympathiser who is a regular face on TV stations in Nigeria.

The exchange rate is relatively stable because the naira is still being defended with scarce FX from the FX reserves.

According to reports from Nairametrics , The month of February saw over $1.2 Billion deplete from the FX reserves, part of which was import driven and also the local currency naira defence.

The CBN intervention in the FX market is desirable, However our currency still remains undervalued and one of the weakest in the world.

If the CBN wants the naira to drop to N500 -$1 today, it's well within their resources to achieve it for stability.

Somethings are best left unspoken.

This is some good news for once! If the Naira can maintain this stability, we might finally see some relief in the cost of goods.
It's disconcerting to note that Nigerians are often quick to accept news at face value. A closer examination of the economic indicators, both macro and micro, reveals the discrepancies in the government's and media's narratives. What are the underlying factors contributing to the supposed stability of our currency? Is it driven by manufacturing, services, agriculture, or the oil and gas sector? The reality on the ground tells a different story. For instance, a mango costs ₦500 in Abuja, while a bottle of cashew nuts costs ₦9,000. I would appreciate clarity on what has actually stabilized the Naira. Is it merely a result of Dangote's influence?

- Increased Forex Liquidity: To ease foreign exchange shortages, the CBN has injected significant dollar liquidity into the market. In January 2024, the CBN injected $500 million to clear forex backlogs, improving liquidity and transaction flow. Additionally, in January 2025, the Federal Government cleared a $7 billion forex backlog, making fund repatriation easier for businesses, multinationals, and foreign investors.

The Naira can appreciate to N500/$1 by weekend if the FG wants to .... by boosting it with our foreign reserves. Didn't they do this before? ...and people were singing praises to the genius of Tinubu? What happened after? .... the Naira plunged wayy lower than it was before .... silence from the praise singers. They are singing again...... the noise before the return of reality and silence.

So far, the outlook remains positive as the CBN is keen on maintaining currency stability. With sustained reforms, effective forex policies, and increased investor confidence, the Naira is on a path to continued stability. However, continuous monitoring and strategic interventions will be key to maintaining this progress.
Very key points: continuous monitoring and strategic interventions.

Hopefully, our FX liqudity increases to contribute to these interventions.

Naira Stability Streak Trades At N1490/$1 In Black Market: All You Need To Know

For a while now, "Naira depreciates" hasn’t dominated the headlines, and that’s a reason to celebrate as the Naira is still on a winning streak. On February 27, the Naira flexed its muscles once again, gaining ₦5 to trade at ₦1,490/$1 in the Black Market, compared to last week's ₦1,565/$1. While official figures are yet to be released, this jump is making waves in financial circles.

If you're wondering what’s fueling this unexpected streak, let’s break it down by answering some key questions:

Q: The Naira has been making gains recently. What’s happening?

A: Yes! The Naira has been showing remarkable resilience. As of February 27, it traded at N1,490/$1 in the Black Market—strengthening from last week's N1,565/$1. This steady improvement signals a positive shift in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

Q: What’s driving the Naira’s stability?
A: Several key policies initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have contributed to this trend:

- Increased Forex Liquidity: To ease foreign exchange shortages, the CBN has injected significant dollar liquidity into the market. In January 2024, the CBN injected $500 million to clear forex backlogs, improving liquidity and transaction flow. Additionally, in January 2025, the Federal Government cleared a $7 billion forex backlog, making fund repatriation easier for businesses, multinationals, and foreign investors.

-Stronger Diaspora Remittances: The CBN has introduced policies to formalize remittance inflows, such as the introduction of the Non Resident Nigerians BVN, then the Introduction of the Non Resident Nigerian Ordinary Accounts (NRNOA) nd Non Resident Nigerian Investment Accounts (NRNIA). More inflows mean less pressure on the Naira enhancing stability.

- CBN’s Crackdown on Speculation: The CBN has tightened regulations on Bureau de Change (BDC) operators. Under new guidelines, BDCs can only purchase a maximum of $25,000 per week from a single authorized dealer bank. This limits speculation, increases transparency, and curbs artificial dollar demand.

- Policy Reforms & Market Efficiency: In October 2024, the CBN released revised guidelines for the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, consolidating all FX windows and redefining the roles of market participants. These measures aim to address long-standing inefficiencies and create a transparent, well-regulated system.

Q: How is the foreign exchange market performing now?
A: According to Financial Analyst and quoting Zeal Akaraiwe on Arise Global Business Report on Wednesday February 27th, 2025 “ The CBN is involved in the market but the level of involvement has reduced so much that the foreign exchange market is now 'better able to sustain itself, indicating a healthy market where cash flow matches divestments. And the CBN now comes in only when there is distortion”

Q: Have CBN’s actions had any measurable impact?
A: Yes. Inflows from International Money Transfer Operators (IMTO) increased by 63.7%, marking the highest level in nine months. This surge has further strengthened the forex market, contributing to the Naira’s stability.
IMTOs facilitate money transfers into Nigeria from abroad. Increased inflows support external reserves and enhance economic stability.

Q: Should we expect continued stability for the Naira?
A: So far, the outlook remains positive as the CBN is keen on maintaining currency stability. With sustained reforms, effective forex policies, and increased investor confidence, the Naira is on a path to continued stability. However, continuous monitoring and strategic interventions will be key to maintaining this progress.

Q: What does a stable Naira mean for everyday Nigerians?
A: It has several benefits:

- Lower Prices on Imported Goods: A stronger Naira means lower costs for imported items like food, fuel, and electronics.

- Cheaper Business Operations: Businesses importing materials will see reduced expenses, which could lead to lower prices for consumers.

-More Jobs and Investments: With currency stability, foreign investors gain confidence in Nigeria’s economy, leading to increased job creation and business expansion.
The Naira’s stability is not just about numbers, it’s about a better future for Nigerians. As we move forward, the steps taken today ensure a more prosperous tomorrow.

Bros, are you sure?

Because a quick check on the World Bank website on Nigeria's external debt stock remained $102bn from July 2024 to Februry 28th 2025. Nothing has been repaid out of it between those months(except payment was made in these 5 days of March 2025) . You can check it yourself online, the world bank website is free.

Meanwhile we heard loud and clear when Bismark Rewane said CBN was using forex reserves to defend Naira despite telling lies that it was fully floated and CBN never cane out to dispute it

If you check and confirm the above, do come back and tender an applogy to the guy you called a L*un.ti in your post. Otherwise we will know that you sre the truest of Luna..ics on nairaland.

Lol!.....kai! Lord have mercy!! Nairaland!!!! What will I not see??... grin

The World Bank website holds all economic statistics for all nations including GDP, money supply, balance of trade, inflation rates, foreign reserves, external and domestic debts, trade volume, GDP to debt ratio, etc.

It is for all statistics. Just like Economist magazine website, CIA Country statistics, IMF website, WTO website, AfDB,EU global economy statistics, etc, hold all economic statistics irrespective of whether they traded with you or not. Those websites I have listed are considered credible globally and those are the places I get my data from since I did my graduate studies research work many years back(I dont use all those your propaganda driven sites like Nairametrics Bloomberg or any other uselesss ones)

The fact that your brain went straight to the amount of loan owed to World Bank alone as the only one on that website showed that you lack basic cognitive requirement and the exposure to engage in any intellectual discussion on economics.

Your post below is askin to stating that because Nigeria only have less than $4bn loan with AfDB, they will only record that amount($4bn) when they are reporting Nigeria's external debt portfolio...lol...or saying because we dont sell as much to EU as we do to Asia and America, when they are reporting Nigeria's total balalance of trade or total exports, they will only limit it to the volune of exoorts we do to Europe.... grin

Furthermore, if you were intelligent enough, you should have known that Nigeria does not owe as much as $120bn to World Bank alone as at today. So how did you assume all of that were owed to WB alone?

I have serious doubt you know how to navigate these websites I have liste or have had any course to visit or use credible sources of sttistics in your life. You must be getting your economic updates from TVC station and Pilot newspaper.

One by one, we will push out those of you that never went to school and are coming to Nairaland to disgrace yourelves.

The definition of ignoramus is someone who knows not, does not know he knows not but brazenly displays that he knows nothing publicly.

You are the ignoramus here...lol
