Beautiful Wednesday Morning...

This was unprecedented. These plantains keep using Genjustu for me. Just yesterday, I walked round the Plantains and didn't see these ripe ones already being eaten by birds. . ABEG, I don taya to dey keep watch every now and then jare!!! I have to carry out immediate cuttings of Plantains from that section of the farm biko. Make I know say plantain no dey that area again. I can't come & kill myself.

I did some clearing, cutting down, trimming, reducing to 3 per clusters.

I was getting better and bigger plantains. And selling a bunch for 4k to 6k direct sales. Na market women I hate pass. Those ones go just dey use the more you look, the less you see for me . I Sabi Dem well well

Okay, so I decided to checkout the plantains this morning after it rained (Thank you Lord for the rain, FINALLY) to see if some had fallen, And just maybe a few harvesting sha!!!

Before I even stepped in, I had see one which I was even planning to cut yesterday fallen.

Note: I have harvested twice after my last initial post.

Off the records, pls be careful when going into the plantain plantation Biko. Trust me, snakes yapka!!! Lost counts on the numbers of snakes I have seen & even killed so far.

This is strange. I have over 200 Plantains on a small piece of land and it never attracted snakes

Cutting continues Day 2

Cutting of the planting continues day 2. I wasn't able to continue cutting yesterday due to the rains. About 15 heads were cut. Today we muveeeeeeee!!!

Is the land fenced, where you planted it? (Theft issue)

Considering you didn't take care of them at the initial stage, does that mean plantains are hardy like okra, say even if you no take care of am, e go still grow?

Is there a best month to plant plantain?

As for the snakes, as I advised someone in another thread, plant weed (Igbo) at different points on the farm, it'll chase the snakes

Just recently, I have had reason to sell my suckers in large quantities. I have been thinking of the fastest ways to propagate them so I looked up the Macro-propagation method and tried it out.
And since macro-propagation is a cost effective vegetative propagation technique, I intend using it to grow about a thousand seedlings of my best plantains & bananas.

Ironically, the dry season gives more plantains. I can visibly count plantain heads shooting out everywhere. I should be expecting a bountiful harvest come 1st quarter of 2025.

Plantain Palava & The Drought

It's been awhile I updated on the plantains. Good to tell, they are doing well despite the dry season at the moment. I have had to flush water into the plantains occasionally whenever I notice the severity of the heat.

One thing I love about the plantains is their tolerance level to drought. Nevertheless, plantain still requires water to get the best out of them this season. You obviously won't get those super jumbo sized plantains this period, but with your occasional supply of water to the soil, moderate sizes are assured.

Mulching is also a good way to go into the dry season. This helps conserve soil moisture. Trust me, small water like this, drought stricken plantains will rejuvenate back like say nothing happened to it.

Moreover, I have had to give a few of my plantains support. I do have some heavy bunches in the lots and supporting them is a way to go this season.

The irony of it all is despite being a plantain farmer, I no dey chop am unless I am completely & seriously out of options. Not in my first Nigerian foods to chop

Dey just dey ripe anyhow... . Well, thank God say I get ducks & chickens to feed the ripe ones.

Finally, Rain

I can't begin to quantify the Joy when the cloud darken and the gods in the sky finally washed their hands down on the earth after feasting. It was a total a big relief to all plantain farmers around here after the long month drought. Even I, with my occasional flushing of water into the plantains wasn't spared on the dry seasons. Plantain trees were falling in their numbers and most of them breaking off at the neck point. I have practically turned into a plantain flour guy overnight due to the fact I had so much plantains aborting prematurely. Nothing is allowed to waste Biko.

Nevertheless, the good thing is, plantain has one of the fastest recovery status transisting from the Harmattan. Two or three more rains and voilaaaa, everything is back to normal.

When I relocated to live on my farm which is surrounded by palm plantations, two (to the back and right side) of which are not usually cleared, I'd expected to be seeing lots of snakes but it wasn't as much as I'd feared. Mostly had occasional small snakes that come to swallow chicken eggs. But after fencing round the farm house that stopped. I only occasionally see snakes on often parts of the farm. Generally used to be 2 to 3 snakes in a year, now average 0 to 1 snakes seen and mostly outside the fenced living area.

Yes, the fencing did in fact stopped the snake menace. I only recently deployed some fierce looking cockerels to also help tackle the issues of pests such as rats, rodents, snakes, bugs & insects etc. and they are doing a fine job at it. Although it's a double-edged sword because my suckers are not spared too, but I can live with that. So long as they take out the snakes for me, it's a win for me.

That's how I have been combating the snakes issues on the farm. Will be deploying turkeys & Guineafowl next.

Regular Plantain Dilemma

Yes, we are back to that particular time of the year when the first rains are usually accompanied with strong winds. A usual time when most Plantain farmers lose a percentage of their prospective harvests . I too ain't immune to the destruction caused by the strong winds. Although I try to minimize the damages but home many plantains do want to stake on an acre farm hahahahaha!!!

When life throws lemons at you?
In this case, why the winds throw unripe & immature plantains at you, YOU MAKE PLANTAIN FLOUR !!!

Just recently I stopped selling the fallen plantains to buyers who come to buy them in bulks for Plantain chips making. Why not just start drying and making them into flours I thought to myself. Believe me you, it's been a very productive thought. Sometimes, I even go ahead and plantains with nothing wrong with them use to meet demands of my high end customers.
