In the old Rivers state

We had Ijaws who identified as Kolokuma and others such as Kalabari Okrika etc

In that arrangement the Kolokuma axis always dominated the political landscape
On one occasion an Ogoni man aspired to be governor and Melford Okilo disdainfully said that
Monkey no fit wear coat for Rivers state

In those day whenever election results came in from the creek areas mainly in what is now Rivers state overwhelming numbers were announced and the Kolokuma dominated Rivers politics
Under the old Rivers state Ijaws , were overbearing and dominated the state. Mainly the Kolokuma
The Kalabari probably the most educated and sophisticated would not publicly identify as Ijaw. They had their own news language broadcast and so on but exploited their connection to Kolokuma when it suited them
Other groups like Ogonis, Eleme have not forgotten what the old Rivers state looked like

Fast forward to the creation of Bayelsa state
We start to see the real population figures for Kolokuma and realize those election results in the past were base on inflated numbers from the creeks
THat was how Kolokuma dominated the politics of the old Rivers State

Kolokuma are practically non existent in Rivers State
Folk like the Ikwerre and their Ekpeye and Ogba cousins collectively are the biggest ethnic group

Kalabari, Okrika Opobo suddenly remember they are Ijaw when they have crisis with Ikwerre . Interesting

Port Harcourt was the jewel of the old Rivers State and Kolokuma have not been able to elevate Yenagoa to that standard

Many of their elite prefer to live in Port Harcourl and still reminisce about when they were in charge.

To a large extent that is what this is about. The most vocal Ijaws on this matter are from Bayelsa and refuse to wake up to the new reality

How can you ethnicize this without clashing with Ikwerre?
But Ijaws have never been rational people they are never strategic in their thinking and that is why they see sense in blowing up pipelines destroying their land for generations to come as a reasonable tactic
