As long as your father remains alive and is responsible, he will step up at every given time to protect his family from village people. Without my father, I don't know where I will be by now. There are a lot of mental illnesses that start at the age of 20-30years like schizophrenia.
He could be normal till 20 years old and then become mentally ill at 20 years old, drugs or no drugs.
Its worsened by drugs......We are quick to label everything as drugs
