Faid enough... A naija used car for 10yrs no be motor be dat bro. The car is just managing itself, if na Toyota the car will survive small until it can't survive no matter More. And also you are burning more fuel coz of thickness of the oil...

And in that 10yrs how many times have they changed spark plugs, coil and fuel injector. Plus mind you that 10yrs period they would have change gasket and rebuilt engine. Radiator would have been changed many times. Instead of using coolant they use water. They would have spent money on repairs.....

To top it off say with your full chest can your car travel outside Lagos to Abuja at night and feel confident that car no go break down.... Cars driven in Lagos tend to suffer wear and tear compare to Abuja or places that have better roads .. Due to the abuse that car will not make it on long journey outside Lagos and it will chop more fuel and over heating....

You can't comfortably tell me that you fit drive that car for night go Abuja .

Let us not received ourselves. That 10yr period that car would have been rigged gasket changed fuel pump replaced etc.

My thermostat and every other factory fittings still intact tho. Na just the oil dey fear me on how to revert back to factory recommendation. My point is you can’t completely downplay the 20w50 oil which has been serving people over the years without issue.

If I talk now u go say I wan sell market. And have Stated before and again. If your motor na naija used I go dey tell you to use wetin the previous owner was using ....coz naija no fit maintain cars. But if the motor na tokunbo especially Grade A I go encourage and welcome you with open arms to buy my oil.....


Yes we can agree the reason for thinner is for environmental reason and increase mpg ..... But this modern cars and engine were structure that way. Especially the oil pump. What we are saying is follow owners manual. If you read owner manual well it will also give you weight of oil you can use at different temperature......


That been said. If your requires 5w20 why do you want to use 20w50. Why not use 5w30 or better yet why not use 5w20 high mileage.. why go to the extreme and use 20w50. This is just common sense


(Pic 2). This is a manual for 2016 Benz. The manual gives you option on type of oil weight to use .... The oil pump is designed to accommodate those weight. So why in the hell would you now use 20w50 for the car....

My brother this is my last explanation on the topic . I no get power to dey explain. And I keep saying I will never buy naija used cars unless I wan buy am give somebody and punish that person....

AHah this is funny, dont you know,60% of cars sold in Nigeria are insurance write offs? let me make it easy for you, any car with a structurer damage is a write off, they sell them to Africans in good faith as for parts but of cos we fix them and resell them. A car with damage to any of the chassis part is a write off.Why do you think people advocate for VIN check go to the copart website or iaaa website and see what's on auction

Those claiming to know more than the manufacturer are clearly stupid, it is like arguing about the order of alphabets.
I am going to assume you were handed 20W-50 engine oil when you went to a store or a mechanic and said you want to change your car engine oil, by my two big balls, many oil sellers at 'garages' and even road side mechanics will do the same, the last time i was at Ilesha garage in Akure to change my handbrake lining (a family member keeps leaving it on while driving), sitting at the parts seller's shop, about three people came to ask for oil to service their car, they were all handed 20w-50, they paid and left.
Oh well, this is how it is with many people, they don't have the knowledge about oils, check your engine cap and have a look at the oil viscosity written on it by your manufacturer, that's what you should use whether you live in Antarctica or Death valley, USA, now you might change to the manufacturer's oil grade and notice your car smoking shortly after or even immediately, if this is the case then you must fall back to your 20W-50, this is because the engine is high mileage and or has been abused for quite a long time (with very thick 20W-50).
Some change back to the manufacturer's recommended grade and vehicle doesn't smoke or starts making weird sounds, I'll advise you don't fall back anyways, car is old (16 years) and you have abused it for two years, keep it that way so you don't draw much nearer the consequences of using very thick oils over the years.

Insurance write off does not mean mechanical write off as Nigerians have proven.I am sure that if not for profits from continuous sale and the need to control the world, car manufacturers would have come to build bases here in Nigeria in joy of seeing their insurance write offs being put back together and joyfully driven off, traveling from Lagos to Abuja.
