Religion without conscience is wickedness, especially when people practice certain parts of the teachings in isolation. Assuming a person is allowed to marry an underaged girl, I believe this should only happen if it is mutual (which happens, though rare). But there is no place for marrying someone off against their will, no way. Again, any teaching that allows the killing of another just because he/she refuses to be subservient to one is out of it. It is only religion that makes many Africans behave a little orderly (that is when they are 'genuinely' religious, like the born again christians- I don't know if islam has such), but in some other climes, it is natural to obey the law, hence some of us question the elements Africans are made of.

I have a different opinion on the role of religion on the behaviour of Africans. I think the original African practices actually promote order. Then response to such a barbaric act was swift and brutal either on family level or community level.

The infiltration of foreign religions have modified our response system to such acts. These foreign religious practices, have also influenced how we implement the western form of law and order, which we have all adopted. Religious practices made it such, that we have come to believe and accept as Christians, that we are under obligation to forgive and even turn the other cheek if need be. This thinking has done nothing but emboldened the perpetrators, while placing the victims in bad lights. There have been cases of prominent Christians leaders that took matters to court according to the law, and people victimised them for not forgiving the perpetrators.

While for some religion you are under obligation to kill an offender irrespective of what the constitution says. Even those with responsibility to implement the law, have hidden under their religious obligations to set these perpetrators free. There are cases of rampaging muslims, that have killed and maimed others and they were never held accountable, because they were following the tenets of their religion.

Such devilsh act, would either resulted in family feud or inter village war in the original African setting. People knew better then and they tend to be strategic about it.

I am not saying that the old system wasn't flawed, I am just pointing out the perculiarity of the system with respect to your submission.

It's surprising that you, being a woman, have this perspective. It's important to know that when a girl is below the age of consent, marrying her is illegal, her consent or approval doesn't matter. Moreover, engaging in sexual activities with her before or after marriage, regardless of whether she gives consent or not, is considered rape.

About the attachment in your response. I don't think that is completely true. The way we have evolved women need men to provide for them - protection and sustainability. While men depend on women for perpetuating their genes in exchange for food and security. The idea of women taking care of men as their mother would at infancy, is a long held tradition that had a functional advantage back then.

Today the world has changed so do our living arrangements and responsibilities have shifted both ways. Initially, the man goes out to "hunt and gather", while the woman says home to care of their offsprings and cater for his need upon return. Unfortunately, modern lives have made it such that, both the man and the woman are going out to hunt and gather. Whereas, some people still expect the woman to provide the same level of care she did when she wasn't saddled with the responsibility of hunting and gathering.

It is sad that in today's life, there are men and women raising their boys and girls with ideas for a world that no longer exist.

Peter Obi married a 17-year-old minor, yet neither he nor Christianity was criticised for it. Obidients are trying so hard to avoid the topic, but they are quick to condemn others. This highlights the inconsistent standards applied to different individuals based on their religious affiliations.

Those who refuse these advances are left to starve. In this instance, the predator took advantage of a vulnerable and starving girl.
