Bill To Create "Office Of Prime Minister As Head Of Govt" Passes Second Reading by fergie001(mod): 2:21pm On Mar 27, 2025
A Constitution Amendment Bill seeking to return the Country to a Parliamentary System of Government has passed a second reading at the House of Representatives.

The Minority Leader and Reps member representing Obio-Akpor Federal Constituency, Kingsley Ogundu Chinda (PDP - Rivers) & 59 others in their proposed bill advocate the Office of Prime Minister as Head of Government.

"A Bill for An Act to alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide for the Office of Prime Minister as Head of Government and the Office of the President as Head of State and to provide for a framework the the mode of election to the said offices and for Related Matters (HB. 1115)."

This bill won't scale through

Why creating a new political office when the current ones are not yet to be felt?

That's backdoor proposal by the opposition

So why was the bill to have presidential election same day as others passed second reading?. Why not replace it with parliamentary election. I support this bill, let's go back to parliamentary.
Re: Bill To Create "Office Of Prime Minister As Head Of Govt" Passes Second Reading by Penguin2:
Foolish Bill.

Should be killed.

What I hate is that some of these men are old enough to know why Parliamentary System of Government was dumped for Presidential System.

The ethnic and religious configuration of Nigeria does not support parliamentary system of government because the north for instance can come together and perpetuate themselves in power by continually voting a pro-North party to gain majority in the National Assembly.

That was what happened in the first republic before Independence even.

Before then Azikiwe’s NCNC and Awolowo’s AG were the only major political parties.

But in the build up to independence, Ahmadu Bello registered NPC as a political party and used tribal sentiments to get northerners to vote the party in the 1959 pre-independence election.

That was how NPC (Northern Political Congress) won majority at the National Assembly and had to produce the Prime Minister in Tafawa Balewa. Making Nigeria to miss out on the refined leadership of men like Azikiwe or Awolowo as Head of Government.

And if the 1966 coup which truncated democracy hadn’t happened, the North would have continued to vote their party and hold on to power for as long as God knows.

Bring back Parliamentary System and you face similar scenario all over again.

If there’s anything we need from the past, it’s regionalism.

They should die this parliamentary bulcrap.

These bills go to the Committee who brings a fine copy and forward same to the Senate. They harmonise, then send to the respective Houses of Assembly so less than one-quarter will see the light of the day.

See the kind of useless state the NASS have been reduced to in Nigeria today. What happened to passing a bill for a unicameral or part time legislature?

What happened to regionalism in a shared federation or overt dissolution since this contraption have not work in 65 years of forced nationhood?

Think about the future. One day Tinubu will leave office.

No one knows the balance of the power equation; what it will be years to come.

Bicameral legislature (Nigeria's Version) is a too expensive and adds little or no value.

I will support this Bill.
Because the 1999 useless constitution makes the president too powerful.
This will reduce the power's of the president.
