Good morning NLanders,

I am looking on embarking on a built car journey. I am enthusiastic about built cars and I want to try something here in Nigeria as I've discovered that not too many people are crazy about built cars.

I want to swap the V6 (M272)engine in 2010 GLK350 to V8 (M273) from 2010 E550. I am aware there will be sophisticated modifications that may cost some good money. I'm also aware my suspensions,ECU , instrument clusters, brakes, etc will also be modified.

My budget is #20m

While I don't want to be a harbinger of negative news, let's face the fact, it won't work. The GLK bay isn't large enough to fix a V8 except the engine is from a C63 AMG. We all know how fantastically expensive those are.

Not true. Lots of people have done M273 swaps into their W204, and it's the same front end as a GLK AFAIK.

Well you can check out about the size of M273 5.5L V8, it was used in E550 2010 model, E550 and E350 has the same base chassis. If you can remember, the M272 3.5L V6 which is in GLK was also used in E350 09/10.

As for the size, it will fit but my only concern is if the mounts will fit and if the driveshaft will also fit.

GLK doesn’t have direct V8 version and I had just swapped my ML350 to an ML63 which is V8. I just want to build something which many people aren’t used to, think about a GLK displacing about 450hp with 7 gears drivetrain? (Brakes and suspensions will be modified)

I know it’s possible to do, I just need the right hands and the job will be done.

BMW are usually better for such swapping of engines.. wishing you good luck.. let see how it goes. But preferably try out a car manufacturer to see possibilities.

This is an interesting and expensive experiment in the wrong part of the world.
I can help you make it happen only if you are willing to come up with about N10m more to guarantee the job.

My first question is why did you buy the GLK?
Are you sure you need a V* in this economy.

My solution will be for you to Get A ML%%) of your choice for about $10k ship it to Nigeria and you end up with 2 benz for the price of 30th compared to a big headache,N20+m and a dead GLK/

The GLK was not built to handle such engine.

Even if you can squeeze it into the bay you still have to deal with the drive line(shaft transmission).

Get a JEEP SRT8 or a Trackhawk.Those are the cheapest V8 SUV

U will need to swap the gearbox too.u will need alot.of modifications cos the 2010 glk uses a manual gear selector while the cars that use the v8 use ISM. It's very much doable but the major issue will be will the engine bay fit mechanical?

I’ve sent offers to some popular repair shops, they all said it’s not possible which isn’t true. I found out that most of the Instagram mechanics only do body upgrades.

Which donor car electrical components are you using for this swap? ML, S Klassen or Gelandewagon?
If it were in Abuja, I'd had gladly love to undertake this task having known all thee fine prints.

Hello my people,

So I got advised by a Mercedes Benz expert, he told me the modification is possible but to make it less complicated, I’ll have to get a donor car.

I am looking at importing an accidental 2009/2010 E550 with RWD since the GLK is also RWD (It can be rear damage but as long as the engine bay is intact.

Going forward, I think this will be the first step in the right direction. Once modifications start, I’ll start updating pictures. I think that will take sometime.

Well, I’ll have a donor e550 to make this happen. It will simplify things as most things will be transferred from the e550

The car is in Lagos

There will be a donor E550 to transfer most things from into the GLK including the brakes, speed sensitive steering, exhaust system, ECU, transmission, etc.

E550 will be the donor car. ML 2010 is the same M272 as GLK , the 2012 uses M276 which will make the swapping very difficult.
Reason for choosing E550 is because the M273 engine in it is similar to M272 but with 2 extra cylinders. Both are also naturally aspirated engines.

This is an interesting project, I would love to be on this project, and make it work, it will be a great learning curve.

E550 will be the donor car. ML 2010 is the same M272 as GLK , the 2012 uses M276 which will make the swapping very difficult.
Reason for choosing E550 is because the M273 engine in it is similar to M272 but with 2 extra cylinders. Both are also naturally aspirated engines.

Whatever you do, replace the rear differential of that car with internal components from an E550 if it's gonna fit inside it so as to achieve a remarkable difference in performance
