Since before 2015 he’s been gripping about China taking American jobs. He knows those sentiments will get him support. Yet every crap he sells in his crappy shops were made in China. Would’ve loved to see him walk the talk and manufacture in the USA. If I were a business owner making such loud noise about the negatives of manufacturing in China, I’d at least try to be the change except I’m sure my clients are too slow to catch on.
He doesn't care cos it is making him money. The tariffs might even make him more money since he can just tack on the charges and pass it on to the consumers with additional surcharges.

@bold, That should have been concerning for anyone with two spare neurons to rub together.
The concerning this is that when he went after "Big Law", the media barely discussed it.
It should have been a flashing red warning sign everywhere.

If you understand America, you will know it's a money market, not a manufacturing market. While chasing low billions in manufacturing "ear and dear", the bleed in capital flight is measured in trillions. What America sells is freedom, rule of law, open markets and Trust. The dumb nativists will never understand this.
How many people in the country will benefit from the money market vs the total working population? This is exactly what brought about the Trump economic populism, Many people are being left behind, The people who used to work in plants don't have a job anymore because their jobs are offshore, 15yrs ago it was go and learn coding, All the coding jobs are now being shipped to India and Eastern Europe

I know medical doctors whose jobs are now being threatened because tele medicine is taking their jobs abroad. Radiologists now have their charts sent abroad to doctors in Asia who charge about 10% of what an American will charge

You need some form of protectionism for local jobs. 60% of jobs in America there is someone somewhere in the world who will do it for 30% of what an American will charge.

Its not uncommon to see young people graduate from top US Universities have 100k in student loans but cant get any job. In 2 uber rides you are guaranteed to get a Bachelors holder who cant get a job

It pays the business men to get cheap labor, cheaper goods it makes their profit margin larger, Even Trump as a business man it pays him to use foreign labor, foreign goods for all his businesses as he pays lower

If we continue in that trajectory, how long before the 75% of the country need to be on govt assistance

In a money market, you make your living in value adding. Sales, Insurance etc while there will always be blue collar jobs for those who are that way inclined - building, plumber, electrician, fishermen etc

Standing in factory assembly line is old news for any rich economy. You don't have to make iPhone, there is more money to be made selling structured finance for an iPhone and data plans. Let the Chinese make those shits. Where do you think the money is, in making an iPhone with input cost of $20, or in services, sales and logistics in the other $980 that makes iPhone final sales price land at $1k?

Just like the money in Cocoa is not in the production of Cocoa by the farmer in Africa which involves much labour for pennies of input cost, but the efforts that go into creating value to land at the $10 Dubai chocolate which is taking over social media now.

How many Americans can you employ in manufacturing today, even at an inflection point when AI and automation have taken over.

Trillions of wealth have been wiped off for some tens of billions of investment, including 401ks, investments etc, disposable income that will make you do that house extension and give work to Bob the builder and Joe the Plumber.

They should hurry up and crash the markets quickly and fully, drop interest rates and reintroduce quantitative easing so those of us waiting on the sidelines can start to deploy

BTW unemployment is at historic lows so the money market is working perfectly in providing jobs, people just need to shift their expectations of what working life looks like now Vs 50 years ago

When you signal to the World you are unreliable, rent-seeking, policy flipflopping and anti open markets, yet the main reason you are rich is because of the Trust (in dollar, rule of law, open markets) that makes the world put their money into your markets, you are hustling backward.

Ha, the Trump admin are fxing dumbasses.
These figures are not tariffs other countries are charging us.
To get the "Tariff" number, they divided the country’s trade surplus with the US by its total exports (t_i = [x_i-m_i]/m_i).
Lol.
And then they tried to come up with some fancy looking formula to fool people like Bemeruca.
But if you notice in the denominator of the formula (below) two of the values(which they chose by happenstance (wink)) are .25 and 4 (which effectively cancel each other out [.25*4=1]).
It's like propaganda everyday with everything.

In a statement published Wednesday night to explain its methodology for tariffs that rocked the globe, the United States Trade Representative detailed a formula that divides a country’s trade surplus with the US by its total exports, based on data from the US Census Bureau for 2024. And then that number was divided by two, producing the “discounted” rate.

China, for instance, had a trade surplus of $295 billion with the US last year on total exports of $438 billion — a ratio of 68%. Divided by two according to Trump’s formula, that yielded a tariff rate of 34%. The same calculations roughly produced the rates for other economies like Japan, South Korea and the European Union.
.....
Trump’s formula included two other parameters — price elasticity of import demand and the elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs. These were set at figures that effectively canceled each other out, together amounting to multiplying by one.

most of this is late stage capitalism and an obsession with shareholder value

it is also what the chips act soughgt to address

none of those jobs that have been offshored are coming back.

and as a nigerian, you know that until the factories are actually up and running, it is just lamba. every other day businesses make commitments to deploy factories in Nigeria and nothing comes out of it.

most of these people have trumps number - they know he wants paper achievements - something he can make noise about

after the china issues, apple is trying to move manufacturing to india not the us

the only company that tried to set up a phone factory in the us was google/motorola

it did not end well

if there is sincerity about protecting local jobs - trump can start by limiting h1b visa [ elons favorite] and remote working.

but it is your same trump admin that is taking a chain saw to the civil service

Have you been to your local bank lately? You barely have 5staffs and they will tell you to either call customer service (Based offshore) or schedule an appointment (earliest next week)

Same with Insurance and sales. Most are based in Asia especially India and Philippines, Builder plumbers, electricians are competing and losing to Hispanic guys coming from the South.

Talking about Sales, most stores are closing down and losing business to Teemu/Shein etc from China. Forever21 recently closed all their US stores, Macys closed, Sears is old news. etc

So where will people get the jobs from

I already told you about Tech, the bulk of it are shipped abroad. Only those working on govt jobs that require security clearances and US citizenship are left

The number of people graduating and not getting jobs is amazing or working at bare minimum wage, A Nigerian woman reached out that her son, who has a PhD in Robotics has been trying to get a job for a long time, I don't even know half of what the boy knows. I spoke to him, I thought it was a paper problem but the guy na citizen BSc, MSc, PhD. The guy told me he was working for one of the FAANG and they closed his dept shipped everything abroad

48% That’s the share of Uber drivers who have at least a college degree.
https://fortune.com/2015/01/22/5-surprising-numbers-from-ubers-driver-data-report/

Losing to automation and AI is one thing but getting stiffed by every other country is another. Like I said for every job an American is someone somewhere who will do it for 30% cost.

No businessman will pay higher for services if they can get it for cheaper anywhere else in the globe

My initial impressions. It'll be short.
1. Elated about the historic pivot.
2. Execution is irrelevant.
3. A textbook win-win situation is pacing beautifully.
4. Trump succeeds and phenomenal growth is assured. Trump fails; Democrats step on the brakes in 2027 after taking the House. In 2029, they return with their signature tax and spend policy. Either way, asset prices will go to the moon.
5. Sometime back, Candy quoted a post of mine anticipating a crash. Well, Christmas came early.
6. -10% from highs is a rookie number. I hope it sinks to the 20s. And get as close to breaching 30. That's recession territory but this is a go big or go home sitch.
7. High-quality names will be fine. They can take the walloping.

I'll share a more detailed note on the economy mid next month when I find the time.
I'll also answer yours and raumdeuter questions. We're entering a target-rich environment. Opportunities yakpa.

Lastly, the universal natural law is adapt or perish. America is vending trinkets--freedom, rule of law, open markets and trust--that are past their use-by date. The post-cold war world has attained the age of majority. It does not believe in Santa Claus anymore.
A pivot (or at least an attempt) is unavoidable. A pivot is inevitably painful. A pivot will create wealth for savvy capitalists.

Ha @execution is irrelevant. Kinda nulls out the rest of your post.

Absolutely bonkers that the President of the United States who could have any number of top economists working for him puts out a chart with basically made up tariff numbers. It's like the kid who doesn't do his project and makes something up the night before.
It's all the more bonkers he does it on something as consequential as the global economy.

You, also like most MAGA do this thing where you don't define what success is.
Most presidents have a clear purpose for their policies.
Trump's policies make so little sense and are so amorphous, each MAGA decides what they want it to mean.
Is the goal to generate enough income as to get rid of the IRS (something impossible even if this was the goal) or is the goal to bring back manufacturing jobs to places like Michigan?

When Republicans believe "execution is irrelevant", is it no wonder the Economy performs better under Dems than Republicans?

So, this gets nuttier.

So Trump's White House may have used ChatGPT to write that nonsense chart with the tarrifs he used at his Press Conference.
Levels of incompetence.

A number of X users have realized that if you ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Grok for an “easy” way to solve trade deficits and put the US on “an even playing field”, they’ll give you a version of this “deficit divided by exports” formula with remarkable consistency. The Verge tested this with the phrasing used in those posts, as well as a question based more closely on the government’s language, asking chatbots for “an easy way for the US to calculate tariffs that should be imposed on other countries to balance bilateral trade deficits between the US and each of its trading partners, with the goal of driving bilateral trade deficits to zero.” All four platforms gave us the same fundamental suggestion.

The de-industrialization of America has led to the erosion of the middle class, working multiple jobs an even unemployment

Its unfair for American middle class to carry the burden for every country on the face of the earth

If the tariffs were bad, Biden would have undone the Trump tariff

If tariffs were so bad, why do almost every country use it against America even the first world countries

Those who are the richest, the businessmen and wall street will definitely be against this because it reduces their profit margin and what will govt continue to watch when half their working population are losing jobs or underemployed

Most human or businessmen will not willingly refuse more profits and more money.
Most business people who are honest will gladly pay less taxes. It is natural to want to keep more.
Apple will not willingly bring manufacturing to America to pay $10-$20 per hour when he can pay $0.75 to $2 per hour in India and China

What happens to the millions here who need jobs, both educated and uneducated? They should just go and die so that other countries don't get upset?

How can we be in a world where all our manufacturing is done by a country like China, we saw what happened during covid when the American supply chain ground to a halt because we were s dependent on China.
Hypothetical war with China and they just shut off the manufacturing to America. Way to self sabotage your country

civil service jobs are mostly bloated and not efficient, Its just where people go to get free money and retire to fat salaries. They were subjected to 4 weeks of private sector practices in efficiency and they are all groaning
