The major reason I hate seeing overhead tank closed to buildings. Some people will buy 50 by 50 plot of land and still squeeze overhead tank inside. If you have the money for borehole, why can't you add it and buy at least a 50 by 100 piece of land to build while you plan for the borehole later?

We need to be security conscious in this Nigeria, this is not the first time this is happening with the rate of substandard iron steels and fake building engineers, one should be careful, over Head tank should not be built besides a room infact it should be giving enough land or space incase things like this happen and this is the handiwork of poor building engineers cutting corner's buying fake iron to construct over Head tank, the fact that this has happened before should make us be wise don't rent a house under over Head tank for ur safety, this is an avoidable accident very avoidable if only that tank was not built under a house, if only she refused to rent room there

At the end of the day, this is a failure of the nigerian government.
You wouldn't need to have overhead water tanks if public water is provide as expected.

Maintenance problem. Trestle is made ... never maintained ... made to last forever ... no checks for rust ... If it starts leaning to one side ..nothing ... even replacing the tank with a bigger tank as if the extra weight doesn't matter. What her family should do that most don't.... is to take the matter to court and sue the landlord. But AI guess they wouldn't ... the landlord will quickly rebuild the trestle ... put up another tank ... and move on as if nothing happened.

if the tank is not balanced on the station , and it's higher than the building and it's higher than the building when pumping water it may fall off the scarfold ,

Overhead tanks should only be held with concrete structures not iron welded structures, the iron welded structures are prone to rusting and will definitely be a disaster in waiting............

Government should mandate this because it has claimed too many lives........

You're right though, if done properly and the overflowing water channelled away from the concrete slab, I know they last long and all you need to do is regular maintenance of the structure.

How will it be given enough space or land, were most tenant compounds in urban or city areas are very small and congested! Apart from giving space, no other solution to it that you can suggest? I can't imagine that kind of death.

And, can the steel use for holding water-tanks be replaced after sometime? I have never heard about it!
