bemeruca:I just reread this. It's been a while since I took computer architecture, but I 100% believe this is bullshit as most things you say are. Where else would bios/uefi settings be stored. |

Satirical babylonbee.com CUPERTINO, CA — Apple CEO Tim Cook warned today that heavy tariffs on Chinese imports could have a severe negative effect on employment opportunities for child slaves. With President Trump's tariffs offsetting the production advantage China has of producing cheap goods with slave labor, Apple expressed concern that child slaves would be left with nothing to do with their tiny, nimble hands. |

descarado:We would love to opt out. But republicans would cry and fight us about it. They hate California so much but they can’t afford to be weaned off our titties flowing with money that subsidizes them and the poor financial decisions of their governments. Are we supposed to sit on hands and suffer because the president wants to play games with our livelihoods and retirement funds? Ask yourself why the core red states are the poorest, sickest and least educated states. The red states that don’t do so badly are the ones with big diverse cities where the left leaning populations is only slightly outnumbered by the right. Places Where they’re like 60% red and 40% blue. The blue cities amongst them carry them on their backs. The core red ones like Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri etc. dirt poor. uneducated. Meth heads. Healthcare system in the mud. Transporting their homeless people to California in the middle of the night and abandoning them. If we don’t want to go down that route, we have to bypass irresponsible Republican presidents whose only mission in their presidencies is to enrich the oligarchs and abandon the people. Democrat policies centers the people. That’s why we do well. Thank you Governor Newsom! |

bemeruca: This is what you said. bemeruca: Jesus, you never know when to stfu. You just need to feel you are as smart as other people and think bullshitting accomplishes that. What you are unknowingly referring to is UEFI and the settings are stored in nonvolatile memory just like BIOS settings and thus need to be powered. What engineers did for some laptops was find an alternative way to provide power for the UEFI/Bios settings and for the RTC without the cmos Battery by using the laptop battery and a cap. You are an absolute dumfuq and should stop spreading misinformation. |

IjeBos:Lmao. Your Cmos battery is a glorified watch. Your bios setting is stored in a flash memory. You did not have enout time to read from Google you are here responding. You need more education before you respond. |

IjeBos:Mumu is tap dancing now. Does not know the difference between Ram, Rom and flash memory. IjeBos:I am just giving you education why modern laptops don't use or need Cmos battery. If you have it in a system from 2020 or even before 2020, you are most likely look at a watch battery Bios was stored in Ram/Rom memory which is why you need a Cmos battery. They moved to flash memory. Today, bios is still used alongside EUFI. So if you don't need the Cmos battery to retain current in the Cmos RAM since they store the settings in flash memory, what do you need the battery for? Embarrassing yourself is your shtick. The gemini image you posted is in agreement with me. But it's a shame you are using AI to debate me on something you claimed to be designing |

| Re: American Politics Thread: Trump Is The 47th President! by GloriousGbola: 9:23pm On Apr 12, 2025 |
basilico:IjeBos has a pc with an 11th gen cpu All you need is a quick Google search for replace cmos battery. Every pc manufacturer is still using cmos batteries A cmos battery is a cheap reliable and trusted tool for retaining the settings in a pc bios. Like they say if it ain't broke don't fix it. |
| Re: American Politics Thread: Trump Is The 47th President! by bemeruca: 9:34pm On Apr 12, 2025 |
GloriousGbola:My laptops don't have Cmos battery. My surface and HP. The macs don't have it. Cmos battery usage does not have anything to do with the Generation of processor you are running. It is a motherboard design choice. Some manufacturers keep it there as a easy way to reset bios. Some keep it to keep pc time correct. But you don't need it. Your pc will work fine without the battery |

IjeBos:I asked Grok. Modern laptops without a traditional CMOS battery still maintain real-time clock (RTC) functionality by using alternative methods to power and store system time and BIOS/UEFI settings. Here's how they achieve this: Non-Volatile Memory (NVRAM or Flash Memory): Instead of relying on a CMOS chip powered by a battery, many newer laptops store BIOS/UEFI settings in non-volatile memory, such as flash RAM. This type of memory retains data without continuous power, eliminating the need for a traditional CMOS battery to preserve settings like boot order or hardware configurations. Integrated RTC with Main Battery or Supercapacitor: The RTC, which keeps track of time and date, is often integrated into the motherboard's chipset or a dedicated RTC module. Instead of a separate CMOS battery, the RTC can draw minimal power from the laptop’s main battery (even when the device is off) or a small supercapacitor. These components provide enough power to maintain the clock for extended periods without needing a dedicated coin-cell battery. Network Time Protocol (NTP) Sync: Many modern laptops rely on internet connectivity to sync time via NTP servers upon boot. If the RTC loses track of time (e.g., due to complete power loss), the operating system can automatically update the clock once connected to the internet, reducing dependency on a local battery-powered clock. Soldered or Embedded RTC Battery: In some cases, rather than a removable CMOS battery, laptops use a small, soldered RTC battery directly on the motherboard. These are designed to last the device's lifespan and are less prone to replacement issues, maintaining RTC functionality without user intervention. Power Management Features: Advanced power management in modern chipsets allows the RTC to operate in ultra-low-power states, drawing negligible current from the main battery or residual power circuits, ensuring the clock keeps running even when the laptop is powered off or unplugged. Why Move Away from Traditional CMOS Batteries? Space Constraints: Thinner laptops lack room for a bulky coin-cell battery and its holder. Longevity: Non-volatile memory and integrated solutions reduce maintenance needs. Cost and Simplicity: Eliminating a separate battery simplifies manufacturing and design. Trade-Offs Power Dependency: If the main battery is completely drained or removed and no internet is available, the laptop may lose time/date settings until synced. Repair Complexity: Soldered RTC batteries or integrated solutions can be harder to service compared to replaceable CMOS batteries. In summary, laptops without CMOS batteries use non-volatile memory for settings, integrated RTC modules, and power from the main battery or supercapacitors, supplemented by NTP for time accuracy. This approach suits compact, modern designs while maintaining essential functionality. |
