I get you mean. A computer uses time in every operation. Frequency is a function of time. Processors are defined by their clocking speed. Don't remember much but there are terms like Master Clock , RTS, CTS etc in electronics.
Correct time has nothing to do with a motherboard operation. The MB has its own clocking mechanism, eg when copying a file to drive , it will show you the time remaining. That's the MB clock system. The correct date and time does not prevent the MB from doing its thing.
Display correct day and time are of course essential but not critical . A computer will still work

Every MB has its own clocking system, it doesn't matter whether the date is wrong. Everything will still work.
Programs will use the system time whether it's wrong.
Again when using WOL or power on s schedule the computer uses the system time.
Some programs might require the correct date and time if they are linking to another system. For instance google search will not work if there is a time difference, about 5 minutes. You can try that.
The Master Clock will update to the correct time and date from the CMOS or from external NTP server.Then everything is all dandy. Modern MB esp MacBooks don't have that coin shaped CMOS battery,that's what bemeruca has been telling you
