WhatsApp will be cancelling support for some iPhones and Android devices by May 2025.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps with approximately two billion monthly users, including Nigerians.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is making changes to WhatsApp’s compatibility with operating systems, meaning some older smartphones will not meet the necessary operating system requirements. The iPhones expected to be affected include models released in 2013 and 2014, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

Also, Android phones unable to update to version 5.0 (Lollipop) or later will also be affected. Some of the android phones include Samsung’s Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini; Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014; HTC’s One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601, LG’s Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90; and Sony’s Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V.

WhatsApp stated in a statement that the changes are part of regular updates to ensure the app stays secure and functional while working with newer phones.

Ok.. Even the world should just come to an end..The power is in the hands of the wicked ones tormenting their subjects..I saw it in the news where they burnt someone alive because of okada..i ain't justifying crime oo,,but here we big thieves stealing our collective wealth,, even make us to pay more tax so that they can be richer..By so doing,,they have accumulated so much to get security as their escort and also have enough to bribe the corrupt judges just in case agbada hook wire..They have weaponised poverty to the extent ordinary citizens don't have feeling for themselves again which makes it at slightest provocation,,the rest na history..We should all come together and fight these common thieves and real criminals in the name of politicians..

It invariably means that no one would be able to use one phone for a very long time, as updates would no longer be available.

It would indicate that mobile phones and similar gadgets are no longer mere status symbols, but advances in communication that require routine software and hardware upgrades.

If u still dey use any of the fones mentioned, na you know wetin u dey look for ooo.

The last one my friend used was iPhone 6. Aside WhatsApp, he couldn't download most of the applications on Apple store.

Thank I always change my phone every two years to recent operating system and it has been over a decade since I bought second phones.

Those that use second hand phones should check the specs carefully and if necessary should consider upgrading sooner.

It's normal. They exited blackberry around 2017 or thereabout.

If they want to stay in business, they have to keep upgrading. And it would get to a point where the software on old phones wouldn't be able to accommodate their latest upgrade so they'll just kick them out.

Those old phones are limited when it comes to the type of modern day tech whatsapp would like to add to its apps. So what they do is, they phase out older phones gradually while also upgrading their apps to fit what the current phones can handle.

They have the capability to accommodate as much phones
