No fewer than 11 million persons are currently living with diabetes in Nigeria, with many more remaining undiagnosed.

A medical expert at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano State, Zubairu Iliyasu, disclosed this while delivering a keynote address at the 14th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists of Nigeria, on Thursday in Kano.

The conference, themed “Endocrinology and Public Health”, brought together medical experts from across Nigeria to discuss the increasing prevalence of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases in Nigeria and Africa.

Iliyasu emphasised the urgent need for widespread public sensitisation on adopting healthier lifestyles to combat the growing threats of diabetes and obesity.

Also, the Chairman of the occasion, Musa Borodo, lamented the high cost of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Borodo stressed the importance of strategies aimed at reducing the burden of illnesses such as diabetes and obesity.

According to him, the conference will help fine-tune efforts toward public enlightenment and disease prevention.

In his address, the President of ACEN, Williams Balogun, called on the government and stakeholders to invest more resources in combating non-communicable diseases.

He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to developing effective strategies to tackle the growing health challenges in the country.

“This meeting will unveil a variety of ideas and research aimed at ensuring that the challenges of diabetes and obesity are thoroughly addressed,” Balogun said.

In his remark, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, described the conference as timely.

He pledged the state government’s willingness to partner with medical associations like ACEN in the fight against diabetes, obesity, and other public health challenges.

He urged participants to develop actionable resolutions to curb the alarming rise in diabetes and obesity nationwide.

How did he get that number?....11 million? ...is it from medical records?...these guys just be pulling numbers out of the air. Obesity problem....ob ious hebe watching wayyy too much CNN ... dropping America's problems on us. How many square meals minimum one has to be eating daily to become obese? Which sector of society can afford that? ...the the one percenters while the masses remain underfed and underweight Obesity is not our problem....malnutrition is ...he should address that .

How did they know they're up to that number when they've not been diagnosed?

Well for a country that consumes a lot of carbohydrate, red meat, sweetened drinks anyhow, 5% is a good percentage. I guess the high physical activity is helping a lot of people

-people will say if I never chop eba,, akpu, pounded yam, starch I never get the feeling say I chop.

Health is wealth. If you want to avoid diabetes, if you don't have it already in your blood through your parents/family gene, then run from the below foods and drinks:

Carbonated drinks
Fruit juice of any kind
Chocolates
Powdered milks and powdered chocolates
Alcoholic drinks
White bread and anything bread
Flour made meals (buns, puff-puff, etc)
Run from drinking tea and bread
Reduce starchy food intake like eba/fufu/wheat/semo
Instant noodles
Spaghetti noodles
Macaroni
Reduce white rice intake

It's not easy but it's doable with discipline and a visit to a teaching hospital to see people battling different ailments, that will encourage you to eat healthy at all cost




Eat more of:

Fruits
Vegetables
Beans
Bread fruit
Soyabean drinks
Pure yogurt
Chicken
Seafoods
Snail
Unripe plantain porridge with vegetables
Boil yam and eat with tomatoes or vegetable
Millet meal is okay but not often

Include the father of the writer who lived and died at 80+ never having heard of diabetes but lived with it all his lifetime

Not surprised at all.
We eat carb like our lives depend on it.
Rice and stew eg. Carb 95%( rice), protein 3%(meat or fish) and others 2%.
What an unbalanced meal and we proudly showcase this to the world.
Very very poor country. We are yet to come to reality that we are a very poor country that can't afford healthy meals.

The numbers could be higher. There are so many people living with diabetes, and even HBP undiagnosed.

They gave her list of tinz to eat n drink with a live in nurse. After each test, sugar level still high after many years. She got angry, started eating everything and anytyn, sugar level became normal. She said somtin must kill someone. She started living her life with steady sugar level now.

There is somtin they ain't telling all.

In the 1970s. Cholesterol was not an issue, tinz were normal. It was even said to have more of it. People weren't getting harsh sickness. Boooom, 1980s dey started with the lies and said cholesterol ain't good .

THE MEDICAL FIELD as in W.H.O na evil people selling drugs to make money. It works, no doubt, but at wat cost.. ask Americans about illnesses. U go fear fear

What I don't know doesn't exist for me

11 million is small in regards to the kind of foods we eat here.We eat alot of foods that are high in carbohydrates.Rice, spagetti "indomi,"cassava,eba,garri etc are high carb foods that transforms into sugar in our body.Cutting down on carbohydrates intake can help a lot.Another one is our daily consumption of sugary drinks. An average Nigerian likes to eat bread with cola,fanta,energy drinks etc.Another health hazard all together.

So far Nigerians,both home and abroad have proven to be a people that care less of their health and wellness.Our people living abroad are one of the most
overweight folks, despite the available tools at their disposal.

What causes diabetes is INSULIN RESISTANCE! There are a combination of factors that could lead to that.....not just avoiding carbohydrates as some people think.

A COUNTRY WERE THEY BELIEVE THAT BEING FAT IS EVEIDENCE OF GOOD LIVING.........

IN ABROAD BEING FAT IS EVIDENCE OF POVERTY, ILLITRECY AND BEING UNHELATHY

Those desperate to reduce the population of the black race have inserted some into our food chain here in Nigeria.
That explains the explosion in the numbers of the people suffering from diabetes, ulcer, prostrate cancer and hiv!

Insulin resistance not diabetes POC... Prolonged insulin resistance leads to diabetes however there are ways to solve this problem

Probably more. We all we eat is fufu, eba,semo, rice, yam, coke, puff puff, bread. Kilode

yeah...that number includes me. My case is genetic though. Since I was diagnosed in 2018, I have changed my diet. Thank God I wasn't smoking neither drinking alcohol in any form prior the diagnosis ... that previous lifestyle helps in a long way. Also, I am not taking any medication. I take food as medication, and not medication as food.
