If a man can’t provide or provides only very little (for reasons he can’t control) and his wife does because she makes much more, what is the husband’s role?

I don't understand why anyone would ask this sort of question in the year 2025. huh

He has to support the wife at home to show that he appreciates her roles which is bigger than his own roles

Anything short of this, will definitely bring insults to him because he may have allowed pride to over shadow him

True.

The problem is that many men render themselves useless like this. Everyone can lose their job/business.

Finally, women are getting wiser.

What does a broke 40 year old Nigerian mam have to offer in marriage?

It's not like a 'typical Nigerian' man will provide any other type of support apart from financial.

You are not emotionally intelligent, you will not actively support her dreams, you will.not be faithful, you will not respect her, you will not sexually satisfy her, you will not pick domestically around the house, you will not jointly care for the kids and yet, you don't have money?

Then what exactly is your value?

Your last name?

Perhaps if you develop yourselves to offer more than money, women will begin to see more value in you outside money.

A poster above said a rich man is not always available and abusive; well Ibadan and Igbosere courts are filled with cases of Baba Segun and Mazo Okoro battering their wives.

To be honest, a husband's role is much more than providing financially.

He is provide emotional stability, jointly train the kids, love his wife actively, create a safe space for his family, nurture their dreams, participate in chores etc., such that if he falls on hard times financially, the only challenge will be readjusting the house expenses until he picks up.

However, the average man can only offer financial provision so need to be held to it.

Else, what exactly is his use since he has decided not to step up in other areas?

That's why the saying 'when a woman makes money, she no longer needs a man' may ring true.

What value do you want to add to her life commensurate to her investment in yours?

Many ladies are already providing because the economy is already in shambles.

More men have been sacked or succinctly put,the economy have eroded peoples income and means of livelihood.

Courtesy of APC policies.

I do because we are all supposed to be a part of the very same society. When one part is still stuck asking the same questions that have long been resolved and the rest have moved on from, what do you think the overall health of the society is going to look like? undecided

This is beyond APC policies actually. Even in America, many men still struggle with the concept of evolving to do more than financial provision.

Capitalism thrives on greed and that greed has led to lesser income in relation to inflation as time goes by. That’s why one income is hardly enough for most households all over the world.

As the world has gradually adjusted to needing two incomes for sustenance, women have had to increasingly become equal or sometimes greater financial partners in their marriages. As women are evolving to adapt to this new world, men are staying behind in the older mindset that taking on more “feminine” roles is emasculating for them. It’s all over not just Nigeria although ours is on steroids.

Why are u comparing Nigeria with America?
American economy is about 390yrs,far older than our economy.

America is simply fighting a trade war and not just an economy issue.

Why is Ghana, ivory Coast and even Brazil not going through what we are facing?

In 2008,the world faced a terrible economic recession of all time, but Nigeria under Shamsudeen Usman as the then Finance minister, made it such that it never affected our economy but this terrible agbero president couldn't prove a point one bit.

I beg to disagree. Supporting your spouse has nothing to do with who earns more or gender. It is a family and both parties should work on making everything work. Irrespective of who earns more, the family should be cohesive and plan on both incomes based on whatever percentage of contribution is chosen or how they choose to share financial responsibility. On the other aspect, both should help to the best of each other's ability.

Did you say Nigeria wasn't affected by the global crisis in 2008? Ask those in oil and gas particularly downstream and those in the financial service market if they truly were not affected greatly.
Re: The Provider by Acidosis(m): 6:04am On Apr 29, 2025
If a woman is doing much better financially, the best approach is to support her partner by helping him establish a trade, business, or other venture to elevate his status, rather than relegating him to a domestic role.

Solving a problem by "forcefully" turning one partner into a domestic spouse, whether man or woman, is evil. Both partners should contribute financially and do household chores. The idea of who contributes more in either role should be irrelevant. Experience has also shown that the one earning more could actually have more time to spend at home than the other. This is 2025.

If you allow your wife to solely handle financial contributions while she does nothing with household chores, you are setting yourself up for failure. This is the truth: you will lose her respect, and she WILL eventually view other men at her workplace as better than you.
