Before the British invasion in 1897, the Benin Kingdom was a powerful and highly organized African state. It was famous for the Great Wall of Benin, one of the largest earthworks in history, and its advanced bronze casting, producing intricate artworks that showcased the kingdom’s culture and royal power. In 1897, British forces invaded, looted the city, destroyed the royal palace, and took thousands of priceless artworks, marking the fall of the once-great kingdom but the Benin Kingdom still lives on to present day

Before the British invasion, the Benin Kingdom stood as a beacon of unmatched civilization in Africa. The Great Wall of Benin — a colossal system of earthworks stretching over 16,000 kilometers — was one of the greatest architectural feats in human history, larger and more intricate than even the Great Wall of China. It served not just as a defense mechanism, but as a symbol of the kingdom’s military might, organizational genius, and communal unity.

Equally astounding was Benin’s mastery of art. Their bronze sculptures, ivory carvings, and coral works captured the soul of a people deeply connected to spirituality, royalty, and history. These masterpieces displayed breathtaking detail and technique, revealing a society that had perfected metallurgy and artistic expression long before Europe recognized their brilliance. The Kingdom of Benin was not a land waiting to be discovered — it was a sovereign empire of innovation, dignity, and extraordinary human achievement.

Wow.. Very educative and imagine Africans had improved in thier early civilization, who knows what would have happened by now? Egypt was also a civilized nation before the Europeans.

Have you ever wondered why the British and Europeans were so proud of placing the artifacts of Benin in their museums? The Benin bronze casting was masterclass that it rivaled most bronze casting from other nations.

The proof of the artifacts still in British and Europeans museums tells a whole lot of the shares they got from the plunder.
Even in the movie, black panther, it was mentioned that some arts in the European museums are from Benin kingdom.

present Benin lives on brilliantly but history lives on.

Why do you think?

Yes current Benin city needs to be upgraded to match the historical news of how Benin Kingdom was in the past. I read that Benin was structurally organized while London was having sewage issues in the past.
