Bro Akon might have sounded stupid but truly he put the afrobeat on the map..That year you talking about we was still listening to Ghana musicians and French musicians like awilo and the rest..Dagrin was a rapper but still had more legs than wizkid and davido then..Davidos first single(Back When) was not even on the chart..When Davido dropped (Back when) I heard it first on Channel O and it still took 2yrs before people even knew it was this Davido..So Akon truly put afrobeat on the map..Don’t forget he was on the Wizkid holla at your boy rmx song but it was leaked and later featured on Roll it.
Akon should shut up. He said he created Afrobeats that is a false. Plain and simple.

Promoting something is different from creating it.

He said he developed Dbanj and Psquare. Is he crazy? Guys that were already global artistes before they met him.

Naija Hip Hop music growth was organic.

1. First the Nigerian government made a law that prompted more of local content than foreign on media stations...getting airplay was vital for any musician to sell records.

2. Funds became available for boys to buy recording equipment and make their own music instead of everybody jostling to sign a contract with Kennis Music.

3. The Internet and streaming platforms made music available digitally and more accessible instead of having to buy the CD of an artiste that you heard on radio.

4. As the music became more accessible globally it became more popular because the sound was good. Then the Gen Z crowd of non Nigerians and Africans were more open minded than their parents as well.

5. The Davido factor. The son of a billionaire with decent music will be listened to... he has ALL the resources to invest into promoting his music. And that boy promoted his songs like mad. Boots on the ground and relating with DJ'S and OAP to get airplay in the USA. Anything were popular for US must go global.

6. I dont know who renamed Nigeria Hip hop as Afrobeats but it was a very recent christening of about 6 to 7 years after the music went global and the market needed a name to term music from. I guess it was meant to mean African Beats as a distinctive form. It started with them Davido and Burnaboy era.

Olamide, Tuface, 9ice, Ruggedman were definitely not calling their music Afrobeats.

Ghana and Nigerians are brothers. A lot of early Nigerian musicians were heavily influenced by Ghanian highlife and respect is due...and so Ghanian Hip Hop is also Afrobeat.

I still remember listening to Dr Pohs " na who cause am ". In 2008 when I was in Kano.

Juju music. Fela's Afrobeat and the so called ''Afrobeats'' all came from Ghana's Highlife, Hiplife and Azonto.
Fela went to live in Ghana in 1967-69 and joined a band called Hedzolleh to learn Afrobeat. Juju music is more than 90 percent Highlife
The current so called Afrobeats relies on beats and rhythms from fast-tempo Highlife, Hiplife and Azonto which all came from Ghana. The Azonto craze in 2010-12 is what created a new vibe that led to the current waves in the so called Afrobeats starte
Mr Eazi said this some years ago..

Nigeria is only making the most noise because of the effect of the huge poplutation and the market.
Ghanaian gorilla you have been noticed. Now craw back to accra

We are on the same page then. In fact he jumped on the bandwagon of the trend.

All those Snoop and Akon had not had any hits for several years and used Afrobeat to stay relevant.

His statement really triggered me. Let him respect himself . Naija Hip Hop was renamed Afrobeats in the Davido and Burna Boy era but it's been banging since Tuface and Remedies around 96,97, 98.

But the very beginning of Naija Hip Hop was with Junior and Pretty around 93-94 with songs like Monica and Bolanle .

No be today. Akon should take several seats back

He did, but he is exaggerating his impact. "Oliver Twist" by D Banj, "Ojuelegba" by Wizkid, and "If" and "Fall" by Davido really birthed the new wave that Afrobeats has in America. And this was between 2012-2017. Akon wasn't really a part of these songs.

2face was big before these guys with African Queen, but those songs I mentioned made afrobeat mainstream in America.
You did not get the point here.. Oliver twist impact was shortlived and ojuelegba became popular after Akon promoted Wizkid in USA. Go and check Akon brothers also managed wizkid to penetrate music industry in USA..Akon brother is big music executive in USA. You guys don't understand how music is wired, it is not all about the talents but networks of influence you have to promote your music..Infact literally all major artist in Nigeria featured Akon to gain influence in USA..forget about what you are saying, Akon built majority of black artist in USA French Montana was under akon, rock city and many artist..He knows how to detect talent, hatch them and build. Akon helped Lady gaga that was rejected by many record lable and artist

I didn't say he didn't do anything, but he is exaggerating. If it was only his moves that did the magic, why didn't P Square also blow up in the US? He did songs with them too. And you mentioning French Montana, what those that have to do with Afrobeats discussion? French Montana blew up under joint partnership with Diddy and Rick Ross not Akon.

Davido is the one that did the final work that got afrobeats buzzing in America right now, and that was in 2017...Akon had no more influence at the time.

P square could not penetrate USA market because of the internal crisis between them.. This is how music work, if you are talented , have the right contact.you will gain influence..Burna boy blowed between of the record table that sign him, someone who has been singing and only few know me..Record label is a powerful platform where artist is discover, hatch and build..Akon is a phenomenon, let us give him his flowers, he actually promoted Africa music all over the world. He always put the Nigeria A list above USA artist whenever they ask him questions about music..That is one of the best way for promoting artist.
Which davido did the final work? You guys don't understand what you are saying, how can davido penetrate USA music without any platform, Do you think USA music industry is a joke

Bro, I repeat, Davido did the final work. I have been blogging since 2008 based solely on American music. This is my field for 17 years, so I'm no novice in this field. I have connects in Atlanta and Newark New Jersey. Davido did the final work with Sony and his own personal ground work in Ameican clubs...paying djs to promote his music while the big label (Sony ) did their part too.

This is not hearsay, this is facts. There is a difference between Nigerians in America consuming your music and black Americans consuming your music. Wizkid might have gotten a little buzz in UK and America with Ojuelegba in 2014, but Davido was the one that enjoyed the massive support of black Americans first in 2017, If, and Fall. Once again, this can be verified by the position this songs had on Billboard charts (Hot R&B Songs chart). After this was when Americans were hungry for more and then Burna, Wiz, Tems, Rema, Asake, Ckay, etc enjoyed bigger fame in America. But Davido was the one that ushered in this new wave.

No need for long talk in your reply, just name another afrobeats artist before davido that enjoyed massive airplay on American radio stations and charted on Billboard charts.

There was never a time South Africans were the biggest consumers of Afrobeat. Our radio stations won't even play it.You all just making up everything as you go..that's lie number one.

Prior to 2018 Amapiano was not even a thing. It was mostly Deep and Commercial House that we were listening to in SA so how was Niniola infusing with a sound not even popular yet in SA?..another lie debunked.

There is no such evidence on Google.A lie shall remain a lie no matter how many times the liar repeats it.

If credible statistics were to be compiled I can bet you South African won't even be in the top 10.

That music is way too fast (the opposite of what we normally listen to in SA) and we can't really understand it.
