Daily constant electricity light supply very important, appreciation and strengthen of the naira inorder for naira to have value against the dollars, low credit interest rate, fuel, diesel at a cheap rate and affordable rate, mechanized farming , construction and rehabilitation of deteriorable roads, fair affordable tax system ..all this will create a conducive environment for businesses , companies, industries to thrive and excel and expand and also attract foreign and indigenous investors into the country

I read this with utter sadness. Buhari tried the same thing and what was the result? The issue is not that certain items we import can't be produced here. But what does it cost to produce here? If it costs far more to produce here than it is to import, then what has the ban achieved? It will only end up making goods more expensive.

Take rice for example. Before Nigeria embarked on the needless banning of rice imports, local rice was far cheaper. The ban of foreign rice came to effect and we all witnessed as local rice became as expensive as foreign rice.

The cost of producing goods in Nigeria is terribly high. Double taxation, prohibitive costs of transportation and the near total dependence of companies on alternative power generation sources due to the failure of Nigeria to generate electricity makes manufacturing in Nigeria a very cost intensive process.

This policy puts the cart before the horse and lacks any originality. That Donald Trump is trying to do same in the US doesn't mean America will experience something good out of it. Comparative advantages exist in economics for a reason.

I have never believed Wale Edu has what it takes to steer the economy of nigeria. but even he can't be this stupid not to see where this will end. Scarcity and increase in the cost of goods.

Government should focus on giving businesses an environment to thrive. That several multi national firms have left Nigeria in the past two years alone is a testament to how difficult it is to operate a manufacturing firm in Nigeria.

Import substitutions and outright bans rarely work. Nigerians are in for a world of pain going forward.

If this is true, then the results will be disastrous. High barriers to imports are detrimental. One simple consequence will be high inflation due to reduced competition. Such import barriers are a major contributor to Canada and EU having much higher prices than the USA. Nigeria is much less productive so the outcomes will be worse.

Import barriers for cement is the reason Nigeria has the highest cement prices in the world AND also why locally produced rice is so expensive. Import bans simply don't work. Government regulations like this also foster CORRUPTION. Customs officers are going to get very wealthy.

The best long term contributor to appropriate and sustainable levels of importation is a free floating currency. Unfortunately the PEOPLE of Nigeria have always demanded regulated currency rates and their governments have obliged. Nigeria at present operates a MANAGED FLOAT system which is subsidized by the CBN.

It's always been very likely that APC would resort to some kind of heavy handed government controls. President Tinubu over the past 10 years or so repeatedly recommended a return to government regulation of agricultural commodity prices. Thankfully he hasn't officially proposed or implemented it. So this is no surprise to anyone conversant with the ways of the progressive political ideology all over the world.

Hopefully this is a false report. 🙃

And who suffers if his policies failed? If you think you're okay to weather the storm, what about your family all over? Tinubu would however receive pension for life as former president while your so called overrated preferred candidate will disappoint you and only then you would appreciate Tinubu. If you think solving Nigeria economic and social security problems is pressing of a switch, go out to contest councillorship in your Ward.

What has this man done ? What is the present introduction capacity of operating manufacturers now considering the fact that most of their colleagues have closed down due to a harsh economic climate that cannot be wished away within the next ten years even. The fact is that on paper, we can do a lot but in reality, we just can't. A lot has to be done in bringing back those that have left and inviting new ones with a favourable environment which includes loans, tax incentives etc down to customs. Alot of things have to be chopped, streamlined and operational before you even try this abrupt rough play. I pray I'm wrong but with the immediacy of these workings, prices of already very expensive goods are going to shoot up astronomically beyond the reach of the common man across ALL sectors because we don't have that capacity at all to manufacture for the whole country. It's not something you'll wish away with a magic wand, this thing will increase prices of goods to a critical extent and how long will the FG be able to cheat the effects on an already volatile economy. I hope I'm wrong or this is just a joke. Maybe we could have implemented this five years ago but not just right now

While this is not new as it is similar to the backward integration policy , the problem we have In Nigeria is always implementation .
