There's a big truth in your words. It's also true that a general relaxation of moral standards has led to situations such as you've described.

In these modern times everyone who wants to marry would be well advised to seek out a partner of equal status not just financially but in other terms such as beauty, psychological balance, moral rectitude, family background and such. It takes time so the earlier the search, the better.

In the past marriage was ALSO a social mechanism for spreading wealth when males were the predominant providers due to muscle mass and general physical strength.

These days the advent of brain work has made women economically viable. The problem is that despite their improved status and further potentials, even high earning women still INTINCTIVELY seek out men who earn more.

Never will you find a high earning female banker or doctor married to an elementary school teacher or roadside vulcanizer. Most times women only marry their financial or social equals when the man is extra handsome OR the woman herself is not so beautiful or past prime marriage age. These are realities all around us.

So what is the solution? Life is a bargain. Trouble comes when a party to the bargain tries to alter terms AFTER securing certain benefits and privileges.

Very brilliant perspective. Those bargains usually are not outlined at the onset, but kept secret by one party. In fact both often have personal interest to fulfill. I think we have most already figured out by now that the response many Nigerian men have to stress is sex. I mean, how else do you explain the fact that the population continues to rise even as the hardship continues to get worse? Throughout the Buhari years, through the COVID months, and now the Tinubu compounding of the shege, what seems to have remained undeterred is the rate of new births in the country.
