In the new white paper published today by the UK Government, the social care route has been closed to individuals residing outside the UK.

Also, it will take 10 year route as against the current 5 year to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. Caveat - The dependants to a British national (non UK spouse and children) will still be on a 5-year route to ILR.

Graduate route has also been reduced to 18 months.

People who enter UK illegally will NEVER be granted British citizenship.

It’s happening world over. Here in chile they want to change the laws to become a citizen from 5 years to 10 years. Lots of other Venezuelans and Colombians have come into Chile and Chileans are complaining that the quality of life is reducing. We are in the last phase of migration globally. It’s going to be very difficult to migrate from a third world African country in the next 20 years.

I think the doubling from 5 years to 10 years is for ILR/settlement not citizenship, it's not clear yet what changes they are proposing for ILR to citizenship.
