Your mum was right Afterall. However it depends solely on what you want, for example, are you giving it out on rental or hire purchase? Hire purchase is better but some bad eggs among them will start defaulting when they are almost done with the payment. Rental is a no go area. I got my fingers burnt when i gave out my car for E-hailing. The car was thoroughly abused nobody told me before i collected it and terminated the contract we had, better to drive it yourself.

Hello Funkybabee, good question and an important discussion!

Honestly, giving out motorcycles, tricycles, or even cars on hire-purchase or daily delivery terms in Nigeria can be very tricky. A lot depends on the honesty and sense of responsibility of the person you're handing the vehicle to. Some people will genuinely try their best, but unfortunately, many others will default, give excuses, or disappear altogether.

I've seen cases where vehicles were damaged or never returned, and the owners lost both the asset and expected returns. So your mum's caution isn't misplaced — it’s wise to start small and monitor closely if you decide to go that route.


To anyone thinking of entering the transport business here: set clear agreements, consider GPS tracking, and never hand over a vehicle without a solid plan.

You'll never know how greedy and dishonest a great number of Nigerians are until you let them run your business. Pretty much everybody I know that dabbled into transport went into regrets. My mum one time bought 2 bikes and gave an area bikeman to run for her. He was remitting peanuts weekly while he was able to buy a bus from the proceeds of the bikes. Every week came with new excuses on why he couldn't meet up with the agreed target. As fate would have it, the bus he bought got into an accident on its first trip and got burnt to ashes. My mum eventually sold off the bikes after she got her capital back. This was back in the 90s before eyes open o. Now na thieves and armed robbers full street. Transport business you cannot personally handle yourself, don't dabble into it especially if you're female.

If you can't drive ur car or bus yourself, don't invest in transport. Bought Danfo in 2007 and it ended in tear for me.

Transport is a lucrative business but not for the weak

People say it's best to drive it yourself if possible.

My MIL bought a car and gave to her cousin for transport business and it was back to back excuse and she took back her car in 2020 and drives it for her personal use till date.

Had two cars on Uber. It was during fuel scarcity. This driver will claim he’s not got fuel for days and only remit payment for one or two days in weeks.

Excuse and complaints every days. If it’s not LaSTMA then it’s one area boy. I know it’s all lies and he didn’t know the car had trackers.

I just took the car back. Very ungrateful lots.

I once gave some military men a lift from Ojo barracks. On our way we started talking about transport business. Two gave their experience and how they result to begging the drivers to even return their vehicles. Me wey dey plan to go into the business just die am there.

anything transport, if you can't do it yourself, don't try it, you will surely regret it

Crazy experience!
That business is for agberos (both young and old) , if you don't have it in you, don't venture into the business.

I met a man in 2018, he (should be in his late 40s) was crying about how his family was going through hell financially because the owner of the car he was driving as taxi retrieved the car. So, I asked him about the arrangement between him and the car owner and what actually led to the retrieval. So he said he delivers 2500 every day, he also fuel the car while the owner takes care of every repairs on the car. He also goes to the owners house every morning by 7am to pick the car and return it every evening before 10 pm.

So, according to him, the fallout that led to the retrieval was because he told the owner that it is difficult for him to always come from his far place to take the car every morning and return it in the evening and then take the same far route to his house, so he wanted the car owner to allow him keep the car, and only bring it as requested by the owner. This was a packaged lie!

Having listened to his predicaments, I remembered that my mechanic had told me about a decent Nissan (popularly used for taxi too) that was up for sale. My mechanic (who I trusted well till now) confirmed the good state of the car. I also drove the car my self and it was so sound.

So, I did some calculations, and then decided I will get him another car (the Nissan) for the taxi business, we will work with same agreements with his previous car owner, except that he will now enjoy the comfort of keeping the car with him in his house. Mind you, his house is less than a minute of pleasure walk from where I was leaving at the time. We also agreed on a specific route for his business, which was the route I also take to work then.

Man was so happy roll on the floor thank me profusely and all that... So the business started. After about 2 months, wahala started. Almost everyday is for one repair or the other. I changed fuel pumps many times, tyers, even battery, things that should normally last on a car. He will never take the car to "my mechanic" as agreed, always with excuses that he wanted to do the fix quickly to get back to business, but still come back to complain that he couldn't go back to business due to work/repairs on the car. So, no delivery!

In short, I found out that (1) this guy works all through the night so many times and to almost everywhere in the world (no delivery to me on that, but I must take repairs of all damages ) (2) he only put fuel in the car enough to put off the low fuel light, and use the fuel until the car Jacks off due to empty fuel tank. He does this because he awkwardly believes I may want to take or use the car (wic I shouldn't because I have my personal car even then), and then I won't get to use a drop of the fuel he bought. This was the reason for the frequent fuel pump damages. (3) He planned to take ownership of the car, hoping that I will get tired of the stress and losses in the deal and reconsider his initial request for hier purchase.

Immediately I found these and more out and confronted him with proofs. I warned him, but he didn't stop. So, I retrieve the vehicle. He and his family came and were rolling on the floor again, but I was done! I sold the car at the best possible price with the help of my mechanic, and when I did my calculations again, I have lost 400k+ in the 7 months of that bad business, initiated absolutely on emotions.

Nice business but don't go there if u can't handle the wheel by yourself

2014 I bought a bike for okada business. The bike passed through the hands of EIGHT guys
each with a horrible story.

The 7th guy after owing me for a month went and printed his own obituary and pasted it around
my street. I got to his house for condolence only to meet his surprised parents.

The 8th guy had an accident with the bike and scattred it badly. He then pushed the bike early in
the morning and parked it under a mango tree that was beside my shop.
My shop was directly opposite an Ashewo house so when I came to the shop and saw the bike, I thought
it belonged to one of the ashewo customers.

Around 10am that morning I went out to buy food and as I was coming back the bike was still there
inside my mind I was thinking that how long this guy wan knack, na the whole day him go spend there?

Now I have a bad habit of reading vehicle number plates, most of the time I do it unconsciously.
So as I approached the mango tree, my eye unconsciously caught the number plate of the bike

My mind stopped for a second! I silently prayed that it should be a mistake but men, it was my bike.

I pushed it into the shop, got a mechanic to fix it and sold it.

Rule number 1= never invest in a business you are not into or have no idea about.
The only set of people that can invest in transport business are those that are into transportation themselves like drivers(at least dem dey see their bus/keke for road when themselves dey road).
The mindset of every drivers/riders are to buy there own Keke through money made from your own Keke . You sef think am. Wetin you think say go happen to your own Keke in the end? Delivery stories and multiple damages to your Keke. Na rightoff you go sell am laslas so as to have peace of mind.

It depends on your arrangement.

There's a company that runs a transport business where they give you car to do whatever transport business you want.

I know of suv for now.

They fuel it, do any maintenance on the vehicle, do all papers for the vehicle. The driver's own is to drive and remit about 50k daily.

Sunday is work free day (meaning the driver can work with the car and keep all the money for the day)

Some guys have been using it to do Uber work.

But the issue is that you can't fail to pay daily

I got similar response from my old man in 2010 when i wanted to buy a Bus with my internship money, and that ended the plan.

transport business is good when you operate the vehicles yourself, you blame the drivers but i bet you its not an easy sail for them too, i help a family friend with a supply van years back as a fresh graduate my eye see shege i even had to call my mum on one occasion to assist me buy a tire the spare was bad as well, the owner did not understand what i was going through probably think am lying or seeking excuse not to remit
