The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an on-site investigation into the crash-landing of a Diamond training aircraft belonging to an Aviation Training School, News360 Nigeria reports.

The incident happened on May 23, 2025, around 5:28 p.m. local time during a simulated instrument approach at Runway 05 of the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin.

Director General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., visited the crash scene yesterday to supervise preliminary findings and confirmed that the aircraft’s data card had been recovered.

He revealed it is currently being analysed at the bureau’s transport safety laboratory in Abuja.

“Our investigators are actively on ground.”

“The aircraft remains on the left side of the runway, and recovery operations are nearly done.”

“A specialised team will stay behind to complete essential measurements before returning to Abuja,” Badeh said.

He disclosed that a preliminary report will be ready within 30 days, with conclusions aimed at improving aviation safety nationwide.

Captain Badeh Jr. further stressed the NSIB’s dedication to transparency, noting, “Our responsibility is to uncover what happened, how it happened, to whom it happened, and most importantly, how to avoid such incidents in future.”

The two occupants of the aircraft, who were swiftly evacuated to a medical facility, are reportedly in stable condition.

Captain Badeh added that both individuals are conscious, coherent and receiving appropriate medical attention, with one already undergoing an MRI scan.
