The so called warning was a warning against a lie, since Adam and Eve never had to bear the consequence of "surely dying on the day they eat thereof". In fact, they so did not have to bear that consequence that the God just threw them out of his garden so they had to bear the consequence of life itself, "eating from the sweat of their own brow".
