Republican Dr Murphy introduces bill to ban “DEI ideology” in medical schools. Medical schools run the risk of losing funding if they teach doctors to recognize bias and how it might affect their populations.

He’s framing it as a bid to bring back excellence to American medical schools. On the surface it sounds like he means well. But he’s a doctor (I assume he’s smart) so I’m aware he knows very well that is not what he’s trying to achieve.

When doctors are not trained on recognizing diversity in healthcare, what are the possible consequences?

Up until recently, black patients were more likely to develop kidney failure and go on dialysis because our glomerular filtration rate was calculated differently than white patients. We don’t know why they decided to add the race-based factor into the calculation but it made it so that black patients with kidney disease were being told they’re fine. The old method of calculation showed they had “good” kidney function.

It wasn’t until the kidneys totally failed were we able to diagnose them with advanced kidney disease and by then it was too late to reverse it treat them. So off to dialysis they go.Most dialysis clinics today have more black patients than white patients and it’s a direct result of this race-based variant added into the GFR calculation.

What recognizing systemic racism means is that things like these can be identified so that minorities aren’t being unduly impacted in a world created to cater to whiteness. Studies have shown that black women in America are more likely to die in childbirth than white women. Certain diseases that affect black population at a higher rate like sickle cell cannot be studied without the mention of diversity.

In medical textbooks, skin diseases are often shown on white skin. Black patients coming in with certain skin cancers, were not diagnosed early enough due to their doctors not being educated enough to recognize what certain conditions look like on black skin versus white skin. There are so many more examples.

For nurses? We can recognize deep tissue injury easily in white skin than dark skin (for obvious reasons). Diversity education helps nurses study more what skin breakdown looks like on black skin when it’s still brewing before it becomes a full fledged decubitus ulcer.

There are many more applications of diversity training. The reason why it’s important is that equal doesn’t mean the same . This man knows this but I’m sure he can dress it up as only “seeking only excellence” to convince those who want to tell themselves they are not racists. And of course the coons who they need on their team.

For patients to receive equal, fair and holistic treatment, their treatment has to be tailored to their specific circumstances. And that often includes race, gender and socioeconomic status. We have to look at their social determinants of health. Can’t give everyone the same treatment in healthcare because different things affect different people differently. I can’t believe this needed to be said.

But you guys have been convinced that the racist people in office are for you. I hope you never need any care that could’ve been better handled if your race had been considered from the beginning. Clapping for your own death is not something I thought I’d have to tell people not to do.

I never said colonisation was all bad. It is my opinion that if you had not been colonised, you'd still be selling yourselves and killing twins and believe the spirits in the forest are killing you.
