I’m Starting A Game Center In My Area — Is This A Good Move? by Vando(op): 9:58pm On Jun 06, 2025
I’m planning to start a small game center in my area.

I noticed there are a lot of young people here — students, apprentices, hustlers, and no game center around. The few shops that run games are mostly betting shops and people go there often too.

I’m thinking of setting up with just 4 TVs (2 PS3, 2 PS4), clean space, some good branding, and a solid vibe. I want to make it feel fresh.”

I’ll also add soft drinks, light snacks, and probably a place where they pay to charge as well.

My goal is not just to make money, but to build a place where people feel relaxed, competitive, and connected — like the game houses we grew up around, but cleaner.

Please:

What do you think of this idea?

What challenges should I expect?

What should i do to ensure I'm profitable?

You will make money. You will make money quickly. This is Nairaland, I’m expecting you to back off from the idea no matter how much advice we’ll give you.

Your two greatest challenges will be power generation and maintenance. Learn how to dismantle and fix video game consoles. Since you’ll use PS3 and PS4 consoles, you won’t need to focus on cleaning lenses. Download the needed games into hard drives.

To be profitable, do not allow people play on credit. Have enough games and consoles to cater for as many customers possible. Some people prefer single player games. Don’t complain when one person hogs a system which should serve two people due to it.

This is not a good business in Nigeria, many have tried it and failed.

This was the reason they always add it to an already running business in the same niche as it cannot stand on it's own e.g, betting, phone charging, hotels etc

The business doesn't have the capacity to sustain itself as the clientele are usually teenagers

This is why I hate Nairaland. People will always discourage someone.

I’ve seen sole game houses stand on their own. Adding a side business is a benefit to any hustle. Oil company no go mind run catering on the side. Money is addictive.

If this was the reason, Hollywood would not release movies for children. Younger folks are bigger spenders than adults. Adults have responsibilities, hence many avenues to spend their money. Children and the like only want to be entertained. They will channel their parents’ money into whatever they find engaging.

I know someone who used his game centre business to train himself and his younger sister through school. He made good money while at it. He passed the business down to his sister to manage when he felt time had reached to enter a proper 9 - 5.

A black man hate being told the truth.out of 20 game center businesses, hardly you will see two that will survive.

Take it or leave,my advice is based on researches, take it or leave it

There are businesses that cannot stand alone, game center is one of them

What you wrote up there is based on emotion and not facts and researches which may be misleading

How will you power the business?

If you can't and don't have a cheap source of power think again.

That's the reason the good sir say it's not profitable, but if you can find a way to fix power then give it a try.

Personally I'll never invest in ANY business that requires power to sustain.

Alternative power supply doesn't come cheap in the country, and when you calculate the funds that you generate vis a vis the cost of powering it,then you you will experience a huge loss

Do you think using an inverter generator will reduce my fuel spending?

I guarantee he’ll see at least five million Naira from the business. Anybody who discourages him from such opportunity is only a hater.

True talk and spot on.

I'll suggest the op goes to YouTube and search for the richest man in Babylon.

If he hears the audiobook and the story of Arkham he will get more guidance.

It's simple and practical

If the people in your area are liquid and you can start off with an inverter, just get all ps4's and start.
It is profitable so long as you are not buying fuel and the place is spacious and homely.
Just start off with enough capital as over improvisation can mess things uo
