I have a serious question regarding the NYSC for a 27-year-old Nigerian graduate who’s also a self-employed businessman. This young man actually financed his entire education through his business, which means his livelihood and future depend heavily on its continued growth and stability. Now, the prospect of leaving this business to serve in the NYSC feels like a huge disruption—not only personally but also financially.

With the current state of Nigeria’s economy, where entrepreneurship and small business growth are highly encouraged as vital drivers for development, stepping away from his business at this crucial time could be disastrous for him. It might slow down or even halt the progress he’s made so far.

So here’s the main question: is there a legal and official way for him to obtain an NYSC exemption letter without having to change or modify his age on his NIN? He wants to be fully compliant with the law and avoid any complications, but also wants to protect his business and future.

If anyone has experience with this or knows the official procedure, please share your advice or insights. It would really help clarify the situation.

Some things should never be presented as a question. The exemption is for those who have crossed the age of 30. Is it possible for someone who is 27 today to become 31 today?

I know the country is so corrupt and anything goes. I know you can manage to boycott the NYSC program. But the problem is that people boycott certain things and refuse to give up the good things that what they boycott bring. You may boycott NYSC now and try to use corruption and bribe to cover it up in order to become a commissioner, minister or governor tomorrow.

No one knows tomorrow. Do your NYSC program. You managed your business for many years and it has been sustaining you but has not been able to make you a billionaire. Taking a break from the business for just 1 year will not be the reason the business can't make you a billionaire.

It's just one year, he can still run the business via proxy or suspend it temporarily. He can go for orientation and redeploy back to his base. You never can tell, he can come across an employment opportunity where NYSC certificate is a requirement. He might decide to run for office or seek political appointment in future. His opponents will use his lack of NYSC certificate to bring him down, remember the former finance minister that had to resign because of NYSC certificate issue.

If actually you know there's a way you can become a ghost corper where your Local Inspector will be taking 50% of your allawee.

U can suspend ur service for a year then focus on what you are doing den decide after dat 1 year weda u really want to go not?

It is NOT mandatory that NYSC immediately follows graduation. They do NOT need to be sequential.

You can only get an exemption if you "graduated" at age 30 and above. Meanwhile, why are you worried about NYSC? Focus more on your business! Except you plan getting a government job later on, you definitely do not need NYSC! You can always choose to serve later

After completing the 3 weeks orientation, you can process a repost to the same town/city your business is located. That's the easiest way to go about it.

Anyway, there's no way u can avoid breaking the law by breaking the law.

While some graduates wished to go for NYSC but for age limit , they could not , others have the chance but still want to exempt . Nawa o...If you knew how this NYSC is valued among many graduates who are not eligible, if there was a way out to beat the age limit , guys would have done it . Baba , cherish what you have and run the programme , its just a year . Good luck

Not in this modern day Nigeria oga! Nysc has currently outlived it's usefulness. The dangers and disadvantages are much more than the gains. The Nysc you talk about was for generation x
