To answer your question, YES. A Woman can and often is divorced by simple word of mouth (verbal contract). There is no need for documentation or court proceedings in Islam.
However, It depends where you live. If you live in a country where you have to register your marriage then some Muslims opt to register. Islam doesn't require any documents for marriage though.

All that's needed is a woman's wali (1 of 7 men related to her by blood) to give her away, and the man needs minimum of 2 men as witness.

Only a man can divorce (the wife can request a divorce but she can't divorce) and all he has to do is declare that he divorces the woman to her face or to her Walis (see above for meaning).

The man can take his wife back Only 3 times. So he only gets 3 chance to divorce her and make up with her. After the 3rd and final time he divorces her, he is forbidden from marrying her. She becomes haram (forbidden) to him.

If they want to reunite then the woman has to marry someone else (genuinely) and after that marriage dissolves can she return to the previous ex husband.

Muslims don't really like banter around religion and people on nairaland (well you know), so you won't find many Muslims engaging unless it's on the Islam section. Over there you'll get a more academic response with references. I'm just giving you my understanding as an average Muslim (not an academic response).

I really appreciate this. The person involved is based in Nigeria. She claims to be divorced from her recently married husband of less than a year and she said all they did was both families and the person who performed the rites according to Islamic laws was present and nothing was documented.

She even went ahead and said they both offered prayers to and for each other on their respective paths to happiness. I just thought she's lying and there should be some sort of document to prove it but I guess I'm wrong.

Yeah, that sounds legit and very honourable! Some husbands just shout I divorce you and disappear into the night 😂. He comes back if he fears her family (the men in her family), and does it respectfully. Zero documentation needed.

Why is it that whenever I ask a question in relation to Islam, respectfully so, you guys here on nairaland always get offended by it? It's like you expect me to be knowledgeable about it when I honestly know nothing.

Just a few days back, I asked about Sallah and I got dragged for being ignorant... Like I don't get it, how are we supposed to learn about your religion when some of you guys are always ready to attack us whenever we ask genuine questions in relation to Islam?
