FG Set To Acquire 12 Viper Helicopters From US To Boost NAF’s Combat Capability by Putindbutt(op): 11:26am On Jun 16, 2025
The federal government is negotiating with the United States for the procurement of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has led a high-level delegation to the US for a Program Management Review Meeting regarding the platform’s acquisition.
Spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Air Commodore Ejodame said the strategic meeting was held from June 9 to 13 in San Diego, California. According to him, the meeting brought together top officials from the United States Government and representatives of Messrs Bell Textron, manufacturers of the AH-1Z helicopters.

He said: “At the meeting, the Chief of Air Staff conveyed sincere appreciation to the US Government for its enduring partnership,

“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters will significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.”

“We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process.”

Air Commodore Ejodame said that following the programme review, the Chief of Air Staff proceeded to Camp Pendleton, California, where he visited the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39), both under the Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 39.

“These squadrons are actively engaged in the operation and maintenance of the AH-1Z helicopter.

“During the visit, the Chief of Air Staff had the opportunity to inspect the helicopters firsthand and engage with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps on best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistics support of the AH-1Z platform.

“The Chief of Air Staff said the visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps.”

According to him, the Air Chief Air also reaffirmed that the NAF remains fully committed to the effective and responsible deployment of all acquired air assets in the ongoing fight against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal elements threatening the peace and stability of the nation.

“Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” the Chief of Air Staff said.

If you can't deal with these terrorist with those craft you clearly are part of the problem scoring own goal deliberately and also sabotaging our soldiers. We want have a airforce and out soldiers are always under attack, it doesn't make sense. When the terrorist have a clear position and we are struggling to deal with the situation.

You can enter the bush and stay there when the helicopters are flying over the terrorists.

Why not buy from the global South for a change.

The last tucanos can't be used becos the West disabled so many functionalities.

Instead of all this waste of money buying hardwares we can't use due to western restrictions, why not borrow Ukraine tech. (Which is now public knowledge), obtain semantics for making 3D printed drones or improve on our home grown drone tech and root these terrorists out

Even though we had previously acquired all the required weapons, ammo, and equipment, we are still unable to combat the local terrorists.

This is just another way to waste or steal public funds.

They should have used this money to acquire drones. Modern warfare requires strategies and tactics. We need to learn from the Ukraine vs Russia and Iran vs Israeli fight.

I'm not saying helicopters are not important. But you and I know this herdsmen usually work in the night and to fight them, we need stealth devices like drone that can track their movements using night vision enabling equipment to destroy them.

The noise from helicopter can easily alert this muderfu.ckers.

Try another country for change, the western world would never sell you weapons that are top notch rather they will sell ones that they are phasing out, obsolete and not fit for purpose, unknown to many Turkey has one of the most advanced drones technologies in the world or alternatively China, infact drones are becoming so advanced that all this massive fighter jets and helicopters may become ineffective in the future, but as usual the military guys are cashing out.
