A former Imo State governor, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim has disclosed that he once contemplated committing suicide in 2011 after being falsely accused of slapping a reverend father.

Ohakim made this known while interacting with some youths in Owerri, Imo State capital.

He recalled how the false accusation affected him sociologically to the extent of contemplating taking his life.

He said, “When I first heard the rumour, I dismissed same but when it started gaining traction in the media, including television stations, I became overwhelmed. At some point, I actually contemplated suicide,” he said.

The ex-governor revealed that he was not even in the state on the day of the alleged incident, saying he had verifiable evidence to prove same.

“I can show you an air ticket for that day, I wasn’t even in Imo State when the rumour broke out,” he said.

Ohakim further stressed that he was later vindicated when the cleric in question confessed to Rev. Ejike Mbaka that the allegation was fabricated and total falsehood meant to tarnish his image.

Reflecting on the public vindication, Ohakim stated, “When Father Mbaka mounted the pulpit, he said, if you accuse someone falsely and later find out the truth, you should apologise. He did, and I forgave everyone involved.”

Speaking on his 2011 governorship election, Ohakim said he won by a landslide but was removed through what he described as a “civilian coup.”
“In 2011, I won an election clean and clear, but there was a civilian coup,” he postulated.

The former governor stressed that he accepted the election result without bitterness and rancour.

According to Ohakim, “My administration was notable for its commitment to due process and the successful implementation of the Clean and Green programme, which had a broad scope covering health, education, and climate change.

“This initiative, had elevated Imo to a tourist paradise in Eastern Nigeria, boasting an enviable environment,” he said.

He charged the youths to acquire skills, stating that, “As I sit down here today, it am a welder, sheet maker, fabricator, a carpenter, and artist. You must acquire a skill that can fetch you something because any human being without a skill in the 21st century is like an animal in the bush.”

Mr. Ohakim, Rochas capitalised on that allegation to kick you out of government house because you knew nothing about governance. Father Mbaka even jumped on it without investigating, thereby worsening your woes.

If you were a good leader, the people would've overlooked it. I don't know why you are still bringing that matter up now. Don't even contemplate coming back to the Douglas House. Imo State deserves better leaders. You have done your bit, let the younger generation do theirs.

Ohakim was not a good leader, he was full of himself. Everybody was against him including the people who helped him become governor.

One of the worst governors ever to rule any state. He was never going to win that 2nd term regardless the cook up stories

Ohakim became a governor by chance. Ararume got PDP ticket via court judgement against the wishes of the party. The party had already given the ticket to Engr. Charles Ugwu.Udenwa and other PDP members had to throw their weights behind Ohakim who contested on the platform of the newly formed PPA. He agreed to later decamp to PDP after winning the election and he made good his promise. Rochas was already very popular in the state and country at large and his philanthropic nature also gave him an edge over the clean and give initiative master minder. Also, Rochas contesting on the platform of APGA aided him to defeat the then incumbent.

One man was telling us about how former governor of Benue State was crying and begging for help when killings were happening in his State, one of my guys just shut the man up by asking... Why didn't he resign so we know he's serious and responsibility would've been on the fg as the governor resigning is proof of his seriousness. This ancestor was waiting for a reply but the baba couldn't think of a reply... That was when it hit me...

Propaganda Rochas and one of those top Owerri clergies used against Ohakom. It was all over the media.

Heard he was asked by the Bishop to tender public apology on live TV, and he did. They humiliated him with the propaganda. Even Musicians and comedians like Uche Ogbuagu sang with it.

So if this was false, why did the Bishop humiliate a sitting Governor?
Also learnt the name of the Reverend wasn’t made public.

It was Owerri’s plan to use Rochas to kick him out. I think there was an Agbaso with that APGA ticket, but negotiated for Rochas (who was already popular) to use the ticket and make his brother the Deputy governor. All those Agbaso and Owerri bishop are from Owerri and may be somehow related.
