If he feels he's being maltreated, and wants to return to the UK, make him understand the risks. If he goes back to be with those friends (that I'm trying to separate him from), whatever happens to him is on him. Wherever he ends up in life, would be his own life's decision. I agreed with you that not everyone is supposed to be a parent, but when the good ones see their children heading in the wrong direction, they will do everything in their power to correct the problem, which may include relocating their kids if necessary to curb their association with gangs.

Don’t blame the boy for disobeying the parents.

A lot of parents are like that on Nairaland.

Wannabe’s who feel spanking your child hard is a crime or abuse. Those kids grow wings over time cos they have tested their parents and known that the repercussions are lights.

At a young age, I happen to be playing with matches in the house and the slap my mum gave me made me to detest matches till date. I just dislike it. Not that I have a trauma, It’s just imprinted in me that, it is dangerous.

Those are the stamps you leave in a child at a young age. Depending on his mess, you treat accordingly with utmost discipline.

Abandoning your child in a third world country while you remain in an advanced clime, enjoying basic amenities and the lot, does not scream good parenting.

2. There are lots of gangs in Ghana as well, and many of the kids down there are hooked on those. So, how exactly does abandoning your child in a foreign land with no parents around help curb bad behaviour? I am reminded of how parents used to send their kids to boarding school back in the days as a way of reforming them, when I was not much younger, oblivious to the fact that many of these kids start there, enrolling in some of the worst gangs and cults out there.

If I feel my child has become entangled with bad friends (as is the case in this post), and in a country where it is a crime to give corporal punishment... I might as well send him to where flogging or punishment is not a crime! Gentle parenting (or whatever the failed parents call it these days) doesn't work for everyone!

➜Bros, sometimes when you see a child is going rouge due to his environment a change of environs may be necessary. I will give you two examples. My late kid sister (God bless her soul) back then in naija just after secondary school was going rouge, there was this boy trying to derail her, she will drive out to go meet him, he will hang around the street looking for her. Her studies was failing etc. Next thing we expected to hear was "belle" etc. Dad (bless his soul) flew her out to the UK, put her in school, omo, she made a 2.1, did her masters and went on to build a good career, before relocating to naija.
Another was when my boy got into the babcock secondary school, boarding. There was this naija British boy similar to the story in question, his family deceived him and sent him to naija, took him to the school and kept him there, infact there were other kids like him from all over the world. Story was that the boy had gone heywire in the Uk and would end up a nuisance to society. Ofcourse the parents could not discipline him over there in uk. Holidays when kids will go home the boy and others like him will remain in the school or stay with relatives.
Guess what, today that boy finished from the primary school, entered the university and in his final year studying engineering. A proper young man. He will return to the UK likely advance his studies, leaving behind socially all those his peers in the run down community he grew up in the UK.
Sometimes parents abroad have to take drastic decisions to streighten up their kids to make them proper people.

If a child needs to be relocated, then the entire family should have to for the sake of the child. Abandoning a child in a remote location in a third-world country, away from the rest of the family, is not an answer. If it were, it would not only be popularly recommended but also considered by the courts, something it isn't.

The boy is smart, not small ooo! Imagine, at the age of 14, he already knows his way around the courts and his rights... I don't understand at all. Having many more kids who are that smart is what I call meaningful empowerment.
