chrisooblog:Shame on our sports leaders. We just lost one of our promising young athletes to another country, but why turkey? In as much as we condemn the mishandling and negligence of the incompetent AFN,her decision to to switch country should not be encouraged as most of them guys on Facebook are doing right now, applauding her that he took the right decision. No sports person who is not aware of the kind of country we have, yet some of them still strive to excel. Every of all our championship winning teams have encountered set backs, some even sabotage from our sports leaders, but they still proceeded to achieve success and and accomplishments. One cannot heap his or her frustration caused by few incompetent administrators on a whole nation. Good luck to her,but It's so disappointing. |

Napoleon55:This is disingenuous quite frankly. Sports isn't an hobby, it's a profession like any other craft, and professionals make decisions that are in line with their future pursuits. A large chunk of doctors and health care professionals in the US and UK are Nigerians, most of whom studied in our universities, and no one is querying them for making the best decisions for them and their families. Why do we do this to sportsmen? It's even more funny when you consider that athletes have the most difficult hurdles to scale when it comes to transfering allegiance. I can as a Software Engineer, decide to relocate to Canada today and start practicing immediately upon getting a job. Athletes will have to go through a laborious appeal process to be granted that privilege, and some do not even get it. Worthy of note is the fact that a doctor or lawyer can practice for minimum 30 years with stable income hence job security, but athletes particularly spinters have an average 7-10 year span to make the most of their career. Favour has missed 2 Olympics events because of the incompetence of the AFN (that's 8 year already) and you think Nigerians shouldn't be happy for her? Also consider that athletics unlike most sports is one of the least paying sports in the world. You can retire with your career wages from sports like football basketball etc, but an average athlete is a poor person. The biggest athletic events in the world pays an average of $50k for the first place winner. Most of the big stars get their money from sponsorship and brand deals a luxury athletes from Nigeria do not have. As promised Nigeria as I have, I also won't berate anyone for taking a decision right for them and their families. I also won't castigate Nigerians who sadly have had their hopes dented too many times they believe switching allegiance is the best decision for her. Not sure where you reside, but I'm almost certain if you aren't resident in Nigeria, but for an opportunity to emigrate to the US with a better job you'll also take it. So why can't Favour? |

Napoleon55:An addendum: Also worth nothing that she'll reportedly get a $500k signing bonus plus a EU passport. This doesn't include other monetary incentives she'll get upon winning medals. All her training grants will be covered, she'll have access to the best training facilities . |

Napoleon55:Addendum 2: 1994 Commonwealth Games: Daniel Igali, captain of the wresting team visited Canda to represent Nigeria. Never returned. Claimed asylum. Everyone was mad at him. He became Canadian & gave Canada its only Olympic medal in men’s wrestling. Today, he is commissioner of sports Bayelsa State. Pretty sure there are other athletes from same Bayelsa who won medals at various events but weren't considered for this position. Please note that I am not advocating for people to be anti-nigeria or to change Allegiance at will. My point is that when people do, we shouldn't be quick to do a quick course on patriotism. |

lovewins:Can she start representing the new country immediately, or does she still have to wait for a period of time? I think there is a new rule for athletes switching countries. |
| Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by lovewins: 8:00pm On Jun 22, 2025 |
opes:Not sure when her process began, but I'm pretty sure she can of she started the process early enough. Remember that Annette Echikunwoke had transferred allegiance from US to Nigeria in 2020 in hope of representing Nigeria in the 2021 Olympics. The AFN at the time messed up her testing schedule (including Favour Ofili and 8 others) which prevented them from participating in that Olympics. She immediately began the process of changing back her allegiance to the US and was able to represente the US at the 2024 Olympics and won a medal. Ezinne Abba is another example who transferred allegiance to Nigeria from the US but they messed up her testing schedule and she couldn't participate in the world championship of 2022. She has since changed allegiance back to the US and have been representing them since. So I think Favour can start representing turkey once the process is complete. |

lovewins:Not surprised its Turkey. They're not exactly known for ethical practices and they're not EU. I think she made a wrong decision, but I understand where the decision is coming from. She's young and ambitious. Somebody that wants to achieve great things will obviously not be comfortable with the Nigerian laissez-faire approach to things. |

lovewins:Ok,now let's all here join them front page and facebook fans and in praise of her, let's write an ode to her . Yet someone like u would be the first to disapprove when the likes of Eze,Saka,Tammy Abraham dumped us,none of them were even discovered here in Nigeria. I can't imagine to wake up and hear that Osimhen has decided to dump us,and would be rejoicing he has taken the right decision knowing that Osimhen is the soul of our national team. Favour is probably our best athlete after Tobi, definitely our favorite athlete, and u expect me to be ok with her loss to another country, when I've always been rooting for her. For u,I don't know some of the benefits she will be getting for switching allegiance. Is it all because of money? If u you believe, because your father did not treat you the way it should be,provided u with some of the privileges other kids enjoy from their parents, the right thing to do would be to reject him, change your surname and stript him of his paternal right over u,that's your choice. Some of us will still think differently borne out of patriotism, love and respect of one's nation This your epistle is rather too long for me,i just decided to read them out of respect i have for u,next time try to dey shorten am. |
